Apple sure doesn't need any additional marketing help from me. On the one hand, the company invents buzz in ways other companies can only dream. On the other, I write and talk about this company plenty. So why am I blogging about them?
Because this scene spoke to me when I first saw it. Because when folks step outside the box, they deserve to be recognized. Because this is the kind of marketing that makes you stop and go, "Neat". And so I did.
Look closely. All is not as it appears.
Your turn: Most ads are forgettable, but some rise above the crowd. Did you see an ad - in any form - recently or ever that stuck out in your mind?
i love those about the etrade babies that trade on-line...
ReplyDeletei like beer commercails as well..i like to be entertained by commercials...if i laugh at a commercial, i am more likely to remember the product...
i rarely look at print ads anymore...this one tho' is thought provoking...
i do not like ads that make me feel like i want my 30 seconds back...
i recently blogged about a staples ad and how it made me feel mentally violated...
i like the tellus commercials with the different animals, the Nissan LEAF Polar Bear(yes it's sappy)and the e-trade Baby commercials. And i still don't own any of their products but i appreciated creativity.

I agree w/Bruce on the E-trade babies.. what about the animal ones..the cat ones where they mimic the E-trade ones...My friend's daughter does the voice over for the meow mix one... yep- she loves the residuals on that...
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school Starburst did an ad where a girl unwrapped one with her tongue at a party and then the boy tried it and made a paper crane.
ReplyDeleteIt was so funny I went out and bought some Starbursts just to try to unwrap them. I'd never had Starbursts before that. And I remember sitting with my friends trying to learn to be the first to successfully do it.
That's the only ad I can recall. That and the red bull commercials, but I only remember those because when I was a kid I thought it was a beer and by saying "it gives you wings" I thought they meant, "It kills you."

I really like the curly haired little boy who thinks his parents are geeks for driving an old Dodge mini-van when he'd rather they owned the Highlander that his BF's mother drives...his look is memorable. Often when I really like something I can get so lost in their clip that I may not even get what they're trying to sell!
ReplyDeleteSome ads can be beautiful and artistic. I can appreciate those for their creativity. I just ignore the selling part.
ReplyDeleteThe old Rainier Beer brewery in Seattle had some wonderful ads: the motorcycle traveling over the mountain pass where the differing sounds of the engine became "Rai-nier-beeeeeerrrrrrr" as the motorcycle drove off into the proverbial sunset, and the one where a bunch of wild Rainier beer bottles (horizontal, with peopled legs) were in a mountain meadow).
