Transient color

In the few seconds between their being squeezed onto the palette and shmushed into a multicolored mess by the paintbrush of a child, these dabs of paint become a highly temporary microworld of color and texture.

The surface texture in the dying light of a late afternoon sun adds a final touch.

I'm glad I was able to capture this before it became not much more than a memory.

Your turn: I hope you'll capture your own color-and-texture image and post it on your own blog.

Why? Because winter continues to drag on in my neck of the woods. It seems to wash the color out of our daily lives. So anything that injects life back into the visible world around us is a good thing. All I ask is that you post a link to your own work in a comment here. Happy shooting.

Click the image to zoom in. I promise it'll be fun.

  1. I just posted six or seven great paintings of babies--the third in a series including paintings of Jesus and Clowns: The Taboo Image Series. The babies are nice. And more colorful than the clowns!

I love children's paintings, by the way. They haven't yet learned all the things you have to un-learn in order to really paint.

  2. Sorry, Carmi, I don't do pictures on my blog. But I wanted to let you know that my first reaction on seeing that photo was 'ketchup, mustard and... whatEVER is that slimy green stuff in the middle?'. Very relieved to read that it was paint!

  5. This is the coolest shot. We are big finger-painters here, and the mixing of the colours is always the best part. I put the paint in an old ice cube tray, it keeps the mess down a bit!

  6. Oops, the moderation gremlins seem to have crept into the site today. Plumkrazzee's comment seems to have gotten stuck in oblivion. Here it is:

Oh My Gosh!! I thought the exact same thing as Zinnia. Funny! I thought, ewwwwwww, ketchup, mustard, and relish left over on a paper plate from my last barbeque. =) Now I'm hungry for a cheeseburger....yes, i'm weird.

    Carmi again: here's here site:

  9. I thought it looked like an appetizer served at one of our fancy shmansy restaurants. Something you would pay $27 for.

  11. My initial reaction was the same as Zinnia's (and Killired's and Plumkrazee's): mustard, ketchup and... pesto? mint sauce? What is that?
These are last week's posts, but they are colorful, and herald the coming of spring in Seattle and the Bay Area (where it's always spring, but whatever).

  13. Well, my picture isn't really about color or texture, but if you're talking about injecting some life back into a long dreary winter, this picture and the memory of that day, do it for me.

  16. Like Zinnia, I also thought ketchup, mustard and guacamole!

I will have to search for an image that fills the bill - and I will let you know.

  17. I too thought it was condiment art! I recognized ketchup and mustard but was unclear on the green stuff. In fact, I wondered if it was some sort of uniquely Canadian sandwich spread.

  18. Here's mine Carmi -

I thought yours, at first sight, was ketchup and mustard! It was difficult to imagine what caused the green.

  19. Those colors look so amazing! (Although I have to admit that when I first saw it, I thought it was ketchup, mustard and some green condiment.)

  21. OK, I thought this was ketchup and mustard. I must be hungry. Strange.

  22. Love your pic! Unfortunately I don't have my camera on hand but a little brighten-up is welcome here on the other side of the world just the same. So I posted a couple of summer-reminders

  23. I too have posted some colour (though not as much as you)...

  24. It's a little late, but I put some colour in a post for you. Nice picture...I can almost smell it.

  25. This is a neat idea. The winter is dragging on here as well, although I can't complain since we've had a rather mild one. It has been known to snow in April here, so I can't get my hopes up that we're in the home stretch.

But just to show what frame of mind I'm in right now: I saw that photo right after the McDonald's photo and couldn't help but think "mm, french fries and cheeseburger". I swear I thought it was ketchup and mustard. And as a result, I'm starving!

  26. I always post pictures, so take your pick! Here in New Mexico we get very used to brown and grey. The main source of color, even in the summer, is the sky. It is gorgeous, whether clear blue or cloudy.

    {Michele sent me, but I'd come anyway!}

  27. That's really funny, before I saw the post, to me it looked like ketchup, mustard, and guacamole and sour cream on a plate!
