Your story reminds me though of taking my children orienteering when they were small, in a place with fantastic rock formations. I was trying to hurry them up to get a good time, and they were saying "can we sit on the dog? can we climb the elephant?". I had to remind myself that finishing quickly wasn't the purpose on this occasion. Sometimes relationships are more important than the end goal.
