Thematic Photographic 169 - Bricks and mortar

Old growth
London, ON, May 2011

I've been staring at buildings a lot lately (I'm odd that way), so I thought the stuff that makes them up - bricks and mortar - would make for a fun Thematic Photographic topic.

There's a certain charm in the way a brick building ages that concrete simply can't match. It's got a kind of texture that never fails to make me want to reach through the screen so I can feel it with my fingertips. I know I can't do that, of course, but that doesn't mean I can't head out again and find some new (old) buildings to shoot.

Your turn: Take a picture of anything with bricks in it. Or mortar. Or both. Post it to your blog (or, alternatively, find something you may have already shared online) and leave a comment here letting folks know where to find it. Visit other participants to share the Thematic joy. Repeat as often as you wish through the week. Click here for more background on how Thematic, our weekly photo-sharing activity, works.

And here's my contribution -- not a very exciting one this week. (But feel free to check out my post from yesterday featuring graveyard photos. I like those much better than I like this pic.)

Ahhh, bricks and mortar, old buildings. I think I may have some good ones. Great theme, looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

Ok, I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I had a great idea so I started through my pictures. I came across my Gilgal Gardens photos before I found the other ones, and decided to go for these. Guess the other idea is going to have to wait for tomorrow anyway. You can see my first set here.

I am most intrigued by the tales these old buildings tell. What dramas have these bricks witnessed and to what triumphs and failures has this mortar been privy?

The saga of life never ends and never slows down. Sometimes it takes an old brick to tell the tale. Sometimes it takes an old building to make us stop and think.

A picture speaks louder than a thousand words

I was going to add 'another brick in the wall' but decided that I was banging my head against it.

Carmi - I love that you are drawn to infrastructure! I have recently returned from travelling in Italy. One of my favorite places was Pompeii. Maybe more stones than bricks, but lots of mortar!

Pompeii streets and buildings.

One thing about mortar lines between bricks - they make great handholds.

I love brick. And spidery ivy growing on top. The best. Nice theme and photo.

Carmi, great theme. It led me to photos of one of my favorite vacations. here's a sample.

Carmi I like the pictures you've posted so far for this theme very much. You always make such interesting choices.
Here is my bricks-and-mortar selection.

Not much brick left intact around here. Here's why
