A brief-yet-ongoing journal of all things Carmi. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll reach for your mouse to click back to Google. But you'll be intrigued. And you'll feel compelled to return following your next bowl of oatmeal. With brown sugar. And milk.

What we wish we could see
Thanks to a series of lake effect snowstorms, our city has been transformed into a veritable winter wonderland. It makes for wonderful walks to work in the morning and cozy nights under a couple of comforters.
I rather enjoy the blanket of white that in such a short time has repainted the landscape, but I always think something is missing when I look up and see bare, forlorn branches backing against a graying sky.
I took this picture in October - just a sliver of time in the overall scheme of things - while out for a walk to the park with our little guy. He hemmed and hawed while I took out the camera. He wanted to get to the playground, and didn't much care that his Dad was once again being a photo nerd.
Even though it's not in my nature to deliberately tick off our kids, I'm glad we stopped on that day. Looking at the colors on my screen reminds me that the monochromatic view out my window isn't permanent, and that color will return to the landscape soon enough.
I hope little guy reads this one day and comes to a similar conclusion.

GORGEOUS Photo, Carmi....You take the most glorious pictures! I look forward, always, to coming and visiting you, not just for the pictures but also for the very thoughtful and deeply sensative things you have to say to all of us....I hope your little one reads that one day, too....
ReplyDeleteThat is such a breathtakingly beautiful photo, Carmi!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your photo-nerdiness, since you share it with all of us. And I'm sure some day he WILL appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteThis picture feels like a crackling fire and a good book, after a day of shuffling one's feet through piles of leaves.
What a gorgeous picture. The fall is the one part of living up North that I really do miss.
ReplyDeleteThat's some fine photography. I just got about a foot of snow today; how I miss those days when the trees still had leaves...
ReplyDeleteI openned your blog and muttered "Oh!" outloud. Gorgeous, warm photo. Perfect.
ReplyDeleteI think autumn is the most beautiful time of the year. Spring has its flowers, which are beautiful, but having all the trees blossom with color, that is truly spectacular. You've captured that beauty.
ReplyDeletePretty colors, Carmi. They'll be back before too long.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo of the trees. Had me wondering for a moment about seasons in different parts of the globe, but then I read it was from October!
ReplyDeleteThe seagull picture is good too. I live inland but a couple of days ago was walking along and distinctly heard the squawk of a large seabird no doubt fleeing inland from some North Sea weather.

Doh - and here today from Michele! ;o)
ReplyDeleteHi Carmi,
ReplyDeleteThe blogger.com set up I had worked for awhile but then stopped. Maybe they were on to me. I'm really with moveable type. Let's see if this comment works.
Are we going to see a snowscene photo next? Here from michele's today.
I think that can be arranged, Colleen. Snow it shall be. Now, where's my camera?
ReplyDeleteHi There Carmi...I'm back this A.M. because Michele sent me...That Photograph is STILL absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBy February, I can finally see the various colours of what now appears to be monochromatic. But nothing beats the blaze of fall.
ReplyDeleteFrom M's....
Sue from Guelph
Yes, Carmi, I really would like to see those leaves... though I admit I would like to see them GREEN! It's so sad; it's not even officially winter yet and I already have spring fever. Thank you for reminding me that the white can't last forever!
ReplyDeleteYou are to foliage what Mappelthorpe is to sweaty men.
ReplyDelete;-)
I love your stuff. I think you've inspired me to be more of a shutterbug. The other day my wife caught me taking pictures of the litter on our heavily trafficked front yard.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm writing a blog about the nutritional habits of the average litterbug."
Stay tuned.
Here via Michele today, though I probably would've stopped by anyway.
Back again, dear Carmi through the Michele connection! Hope your day is good!
ReplyDeleteIt's a winter wonderland here, too. And we didn't even have a decent fall...about 3 days of mediocre leaves this year, so that photo does my heart good. Shabbat Shalom.
ReplyDeleteMichele...
Carmi, I love how you're able to see the simple abundance that surrounds you. That's what makes your blog so fun to visit.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely photo. Fall is my favorite season of the year, and I too miss the leaves, no matter what color. However, living in Wisconsin, I have to be realistic and learn to love the other seasons, otherwise life would be no fun. Thus...yay snow and cold!
ReplyDeleteMichele sent me...
LOL, LOL., Michele sent me back once again Carmi...It's a weekend thing for sure, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm here via Michele. Beautiful pic. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThats a fantastic picture. those beautiful colours are there for such a short time, it's easy to forget them. It's nice to bring the colour back into our life during a dreary December day:-)
ReplyDeleteMichele sent me today, but I try to come regularly anyway.
Beautiful picture! We don't have snow here, but we also don't have fall. Our leaves just turn brown before they let go. Here from Michele's today.
ReplyDeletehehe, hi carmi, michele sent me. i love the picture, i too, have been perusing my fall pictures. we dont have snow yet, but all of the leaves are down now (we had a big wind storm) and everything looks so bare! i look forward to spring. of course, im going to enjoy winter, too. ski ski ski!
ReplyDelete2nd visit today -
ReplyDeleteI just found a comment you buried in the archives. Thanks for the compliment. I acutally used to write articles on movies for an old, now defunct entertainment weekly. I'll eventually seek another outlet.
Talk to you soon - here via michele, again.
Oh those leaves are beautiful! It's why autumn is my favorite season. But the blanket of white is also gorgeous to look at. (Particulary if you know you don't have to out in it!)
ReplyDeleteWow...
ReplyDeleteOoh, pretty! Are you on Flickr? If so, I would love to add you as a contact.
ReplyDeleteWe just got back from shopping, too. No mall, just a strip mall and a couple of sporting goods stores looking for a decent sled that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Then the kids turned on the TV and watched a curling match, but we couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. Any clues?
ReplyDeleteMichele....
Hi Deana. The photo strip toward the top of my sidebar is hosted by Flickr, so it's already in place. Thanks for the offer!
ReplyDeleteHi Carmi...Michelle sent me. I have a similar picture I took in the beginning of November. We also got 8 inches of the white stuff yesterday. What I would do for those glorious days of fall again.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend!
That would be a really great screensaver! Hope you are having a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteTook a stop over at Michele's and she sent me over here. But you know I would have made it over eventually on my own!
Stunning photograph,we are in the throws of summer here :)
ReplyDeleteMichele sent me today
