A study in wet tile

Ceramic fantastic
London, ON, October 2006

The kids have been spending a lot of time in swimming pools lately. Between camp, friends and grandparents, it often seems that there isn't a pool in eastern Canada that they haven't graced with their presence this summer. I say that with a smile, because few things are happier to watch than little folks at play.

I snapped this last autumn while the kids had a swim lesson. The ex-lifeguard in me always seems to find comfort in these places. Maybe it's because I always felt so at home in the aquatic world. Whatever it is, I think it's worth trying to capture in a picture.

Your turn: What's your place of comfort? Why?

One more thing: Today marks thirty years since Elvis Presley died. Do you think the Elvis-is-alive theorists could finally put it to bed?

  1. Carmi, I love the perspective of your photos. You see things so uniquely. I would never think to shoot this, but it's an awesome shot.

My place of comfort is bed, not for the obvious reason of sleep, but the comfort I feel just before sleep, with my husband next to me (while we both read geeky things, of course).

Oh, and Michele sent me. She says "hi!"

  2. Great perspective! I don't really have a safe place, though I always feel very relaxed near the sea.

I don't think the Elvis conspiratorists will ever admit he is gone. I had a boss who fervently believed he was still alive and spent several occassions trying to convince me with his 'evidence'. Then of course he also beleived a womans place was in the home and that 'gay' people were against God's plan (his words, NOT mine'. We had to raise a complaint about him in the end.

  4. Answering the second question first, I don't think the Elvis is Alive people will ever let that go. He could have been abducted by aliens you know...
Comfort place for me is my sky chair on the side porch. I also find a quite spot in an old forest to be very comforting. I grew up in the country and spent a lot of time in the woods.

  5. My place of comfort is here--sitting at my computer surfing the net. Either that or sinking into the plush upholstery of my recliner and watching TV. If I can get the dog off of it, that is. At least the dog hasn't started using my computer yet.

  6. lately, a massage table, where long ago I learned to receive, and now I am studying how to be a giver
( side note: I a have not used any Tylenol like products since starting to give massage) it is healing. plain and simple.

  7. My home is my comfort sanctuary, preferably cuddled with my husband and/or cats. In real life I'm rather introverted, so it's a nice retreat where I don't have to exert myself trying to come up with conversation.

Re: Elvis? All day on the radio yesterday, I heard DJs commenting on the 30th anniversary of Elvis' disappearance. Much as we sane folks might wish, I don't think it's going away anytime soon. Perhaps with the next generation...

Elvis is dead and has been dead.

  9. Very nice picture- I love patterned tiles on floors & walls. Stuff that is commonplace-everyday to most people fascinates me!
My place of comfort is home in general- inside or outside- I just like being at home.
    Visiting from Michele's today.

  10. Wet tiles always remind me of freshly washed kitchen floors in the restuarants where I've worked. After a long, rough night with a multitude of everything landing there, the kitchen sparkles when the shift is over and the janitors sling the mop for the last time. I thought of that when I saw your picture.

My comfort spot is my bedroom, which looks out into my garden in the backyard.

  11. I always love all your pictures Carmi, and this is no exception...! Your view of things is unique and it also allows all of us to see things we don't usually really look at, and I LOVE that!

The "Elivis Is Alive" people need to definitely put that one to bed...! Thirty years...Well, I guess denial can be a very very strong motivation for certain beliefs. (lol)

I dearly appreciate you trying to help me Carmi...but, I am still exhausted thinking about how I might "track" down the problem...As I said, I just don't have the savvy....I DO think I have to do something about WINDOWS...and maybe THAT alone might solve some of the problem of the Video or lack there of....! If I couldn't see it at all on Picassa, I would think that there is a greater pribelm...BUT....since I am able to see it there...Something is working right. Incidentally, I do not download anything directly to Picassa....I do it later. ALL my pictures are dowmloaded to my computer right from the camera. Later, when I GO to Picassa...it automatically downloads everything, including the Video...BUT, if I save the video to disk...and delete it on the computer, it WON'T go to Picassa.
WHY I was unable to send any video in an email from my computer..I do not know....! BUT, I think Windows is the problem. Your thoughts, my dear?

  13. I find comfort visiting my mom. I enjoy being in the house that I grew up in, and around all the wonderful pictures and memories of our family.

Elvis is dead? No. Neither is John Lennon or Buddy Holly.

  14. My place of comfort is in a small town. My small town, with my big cajun family and lots of good food...

    Have a great weekend

  15. I'm an ex-lifeguard too and, like you, always feel at home in aquatic places. Water is my element.

  16. wow, that's a great shot. so simple, yet somehow intriguing.

my place of comfort is sitting at my piano. unfortunately, it's still at my ex's, because the apartment where i live now isn't big enough for it. but when i go over once in a while, i sit down at the bench and caress the keys and it's soothing to me. not sure why exactly, but it is.

  17. ahhh thank you Carmi - seems I have been hounded by Elvis all week and now I know why...*sigh*

my place of comfort...kitchens, mine or other peoples.. it's where I have had the most real conversations, where I end up at parties... it's a sociable place where people feel at home...

  18. I never really learned to swim, so pools to me are a source of stress, in ways! (How sad is that?)

My comfort place is my home, but also along our dusty roads when I have time to go for a walk and take it all in. I love being outside in the familiar countryside with the sound of birds and cicadas.

    a path glistens -

    out there
    tile glistens
    at dawn . . .

  20. My place of comfort? Good question. I would say one of those places would be when I visit my Grandparent's house. I'm always completely welcomed and have full access to anything in the house i.e. food, TV, computer, pool table...

It's a place that I am completely welcomed as long as I want to stay.
