A brief-yet-ongoing journal of all things Carmi. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll reach for your mouse to click back to Google. But you'll be intrigued. And you'll feel compelled to return following your next bowl of oatmeal. With brown sugar. And milk.

Made a new friend at the beach
Eye-to-eye with a gull
Deerfield Beach, Florida, December 2006 [Click image to close-ify]
Just because I've taken pictures of birds previously doesn't mean I won't do it again. At least that's what I told myself as I carefully carried my camera onto the beach and levelled it at this particularly aggressive seagull.
This is one of those images that makes me wonder why the heck I'm not spending every waking moment chasing down similar sights. On second thought...
Your turn: I've got more bird pictures. I'll add them to future blog entries if you're game. Just let me know. And also let me know what your first, visceral thought was when you first saw this photo.

My first thought? Ooh! Larger! (As in, I want to see it larger.) Close-ify helped, but I really wanted a close-up of those webbed feet.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo, Carmi. More birds? Yes, please.
Definitely game for more birds (is that a pun?). First thought: oh another seagull - the previous blog I was reading was PostSecret and there's a powerful image on there this week involving a seagull, at least I think it was a seagull, it's much smaller than yours.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was how it looks like time is standing still. I have always noticed that about pictures of flying birds...it is like capturing time. I can almost feel the wind that they brid is flying agianst. Well done Carmi.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought is that he's hungry! The last time we were in FL when our kids were small, they fed bread to the gulls off our hotel balcony. After that first time, we had flocks of gulls on the railing every day, at all hours. They are a persistent bunch!, but pretty to watch in flight.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that bird...my first thought was, he's flying right AT me!
ReplyDeleteYes, more birds, please. AWESOME shot!
: )
ReplyDelete1st Visceral thought,
ReplyDeleteWow they are a lot less annoying in pictures.
Great shot Carmi
my first thought was - see, that's the reason I always made an M when making birds as a child. :) love the bird pics, Carmi
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was, "Is he loaded or reloading?"
ReplyDeleteMike
Honestly, my very first thought was of the time I was walking in AC and a bird almost pooped on me. You wanted honesty, right?:)
ReplyDeletemy first thought...DUCK...not the animal, but the action. Love this shot though, its very alive.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought -- Ohhh, I want to go to the Ocean again!, followed by "Mine? Mine? Mine?" :) I know a lot of people find them annoying, but I love seagulls. Wonderful photo! Definitely more birds please, thank you.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought.......johnathon livingston has come to share his wisdom.......
ReplyDeleteI just read your last three posts and it brought back such wonderful driving through the night vacation memories...of when I was a kid making that same trek down and UP I-75 (I grew up in Burlington, so know the route well) and the wonderful feeling of pouring pale pasty selves out of the car and rolling onto the sun baked beach to rejuvenate after a Canadian winter. LOVED it!!!
Family vacations........ESPECIALLY time near a beach are very important to my husband and I as well....You call them "the experience," we call them "looking for the happening..."
We have been living out in the Maritimes now for several years spend the majority of our summer weekends in Nova Scotia.......and at least a week of surf and sand and fun and sun with Anne Shirley on PEI.
Carmi.........I love your posts.....I love the feeling and love your express behind your words. When I read something you have written about your family, I can almost see the heartwarmth glowing from you.
What did Johnathon Livingston say to you after you took his photo?
What a great shot! The detail is outstanding. I can't help but wonder that the bird was thinking? Can you imagine what was going through it's mind? I would love to see more pics like this. I've often thought you were a wonderful photographer and think you should post pictures more often. How about devoting one day a week to putting a few up and letting us add some captions? Might be a innovative and interactive thing for us bloggers? Thanks for stopping.
ReplyDeleteToodles,
Maryanne
My first thought was, "Yeeeeeesh, watch out here he comes!" Those fellas can be persistent...and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI for one wouldn't mind more bird pictures.
That's a great shot of the gull!
ReplyDeleteI watched Hitchcock's "The Birds" last week and this shot brought that film to mind.
Cheers,
Patricia

My first thought? This might be the same bird that dive bombed my daughter at Target the other day... she barely got in and got the door shut before he let loose with his load!
ReplyDelete"Lunch-time- what did you bring for me to steal?"
