More icy goodness

Iced joint
London, Ontario, February 2007 [Click to enlarge]

This is another in a series of photos of the icicles dangling from the roof over our front porch. You've all enjoyed my other ice photos so much that I thought I'd continue the theme. Hope that's OK with you.

My philosophy was simple: Every night, I'd step carefully onto the cold concrete and grab a few pictures before heading back inside. I thought that as long as they were around, I'd keep shooting them.

My timing was opportune, because in the few days since I took this image, the temperature has warmed up, and the meltoff has begun. This icicle no longer exists, which makes this picture of it all the more memorable.

Your turn: What's worth shooting in front of your nose?

  1. Hey!
I was so glad to see you at my place. You are very kind yourself. Your profile could "fit me".
I have enjoyed visiting here. I do plan to come back.
Please come by anytime, I would love to see you.
    Have a great night!

  3. Your picture reminds me of the mystery that is unfolding in our front yard. The melting snow and ice is causing our sump pump to be flooded with water, and the pump sprays water with so much force that it moves the snow, pulls away the grass, and churns up the soil. And it cycles over again every three minutes. We're wondering, what is going on down there? Could I capture all this in a photo? I know that you could.

  4. i miss icicles it never gets cold enough in Virginia. I swear I miss germany more in the winter than any other season and its mainly because of the lack of cold and snow here. PS saw you at Jins and got intrigued about the journalist part.

  6. At the moment I am not sure what there is under my nose to shoot except half melted snow drifts which have lots of grit and dirt in them, mud, in various stages of frozen and mushy depending on the time of day, and of course my horses who are spending the day in today as it is very windy and the mud doesnt make them very happy. Hmm maybe I must go into the barn and do some creative available light stuff with them. It is overcast too which doesnt help.

I am now wishing I had done some closeups of the icicles now that I have seen yours. We normally have at least one cold snap before spring so I will probably still get my chance.

    Great shot.

  7. What is there, in front of my own nose, that is worth capturing for a moment in time? Well, at the present, it would be the birds that are crowding in at the birdfeeders in the front yard. With the colders temps from last week, they were eating it up faster than I could put it out. I would sometimes stand for long periods of time at the big bay window in the dining room, watching them, mesmerized by their complex "social interactions"...
and their incredible dexterity and agile flight. At one point, I counted 7 different species, not counting the squirrels, who are always attempting to bully the birds - and each other - for the sunflower seeds. HOwever, the last time that I got "carried away" with my camera, was about 5 months ago, when Fall was in full swing, and there were about a million different variations in leaf colors, everywhere I turned. I was entranced with how incredibly lovely the colors were, whether the leaves were in the trees, or already on the ground.

BTW, another really NICE ice photograph there! I have a couple that I took back in December 2004, when we had a brief, but fierce, ice storm, here in NC. My dad & his wife, who are "professional photographers", in Oregon, even liked them...which was encouraging.

Thanks for another interesting & enjoyable blog today!

  9. Ice is always so magical, and your photos of it even more so.

Haven't been here in a while because my blogroll code isn't showing me updates!!! I should just read via RSS, but it's not as much fun.

Another reminder how ephemeral the world around us really is...

  11. I've always thought the blue USB lights on all my peripherals would be very aesthetic when zoomed in on.

  13. Are you sure this isin't an ultrasound pic of an albino lion fetus?
    I want your zoom!

I've been posting lots of sea-ice/ ice-flow shots myself.

  14. Ummm...the driver in front of me that keeps braking for no reason? Or did you mean a different type of shoot, Carmi?

  15. Great photo! I had a HUGE icicle form at one corner of my house. It dripped off the roof and the water dripping from the end froze from the ground up, like a stalactite and stalagmite. Eventually they met in the middle and created a column of ice. I'd never seen anything like it. I took a picture with my rinky-dink digital camera :).

  16. I am going to miss these Carmi. I like the formations and finding more that what I originally see when the page loads. The next snow...take some more! :)

  17. Worth photographing that's under my nose...currently? Ice and mud...water...and really messed up asphalt on the roads! :) Hmmm, it'd be interesting to do a series on potholes in the road.

  18. I just realized, as I was looking back over your February blog photos, that this one looks VERY MUCH like a piece of "sculpture"...and beyond that, very much like the sculpture of a "torso". Very, very cool...
