Pastels on the lawn

Colorful places to rest
Grand Bend, Ontario, July 2007 [Click to enlarge]

My wife noticed these chairs sitting unoccupied on the sloping front lawn of a sleepy old inn overlooking the beachfront parking lot in this lakeside town. Alternately known as adirondack chairs or muskoka chairs, the colors almost begged to be photographed.

I didn't even have to ask. As I looked at her, she nodded at me and, smiling the smile of a wife who knows what drives me, told me to take a walk with my camera. She's cool that way.

I think we have a potential new candidate for our living room wall.

Your turn: This image continues to speak to me 10 days after I first took it. What's it saying to you?

One more thing: This isn't the first time I've explored these chairs. Click here to go back in time.

  1. BEAUTIFUL picture...And I surely understand the "need" to photgraph them....The nicest Adarondac(?) chairs I've ever seen....Personally, I have never understood their popularity as a chair...They are the hardest, most uncomfortable chair I have ever sat in....Of course, I am someone who needs "soft" all the time, so I may not be the best judhe, though I am the BEST Judge for my Tush...(lol)....And the softest thig about these chairs are those colors in your photograph, Carmi....LOL! How about a little matching cushion???

Thanks for your visit and your very very kind words!

  6. Those chairs are not only begging to be photographed... they're begging for me... or some other nice soul... to sit in them with a nice cold (long island) iced tea and enjoy the view. :)

  7. Oh, yes! Beautiful! I happen to have two of these chairs in a beautiful blue color, whiling away their lives on my back deck. I like these colors better, though.

The pic makes me think of vacation, relaxation, and Neco wafers.

  8. It says, "two good friends, three good books, and fruity drinks with umbrellas.."
    I can imagine myself there!

  9. Have some fun! Watch the sunset!

I've been noticing chairs like this in the last year and feeling very close to wanting one myself, although my house is a log cabin and I don't think it would do them justice.

  10. It's saying two varieties of lemonade, 1 of limeade.

But that might just be becaus I'm thirsty, and love sugar.

  11. Love that picture. And yes, I remember that other post on those Muskoka chairs, or as I like to call them, Jamaica chairs.

When I look at that photo, for some reason I think of candy. Because of the colours, I guess. Personally I prefer my Jamaica chairs to be white or a lovely light wood stain. It's what I remember and love as a kid, I suppose.

  12. That is a great picture. It reminds me of ice cream. A triple scoop of 3 different flavors. Yummmm.

  13. I also prefer them with pillows, but those colors are so inviting and they say "Sit a spell and enjoy the view with us."

  16. The photo is great - I like the colors and the texture of everything that's included. On top of all, I like the stone wall in the back. That is what really captures my sight.

  18. I love those kind of chairs, they're so comfortable

The picture reminds me of Spring for some reason. The colors...Easter.

  19. it is saying, "Come sit for a bit, with an ice cold drink and a good book." It would look great on your wall! Good shot.

  20. The best Adirondack chairs I've ever seen in my life are the two my husband made himself. They're outside now, nicely weathered, and used virtually every day. No cushions, please! A true "Dacker" aka "Adirondacker" would NEVER use cushions. The shape of the chair takes care of any comfort which is needed.

  21. The colors, reminiscent of candy which is a "treat" and not (usually) a daily indulgence - combine with the shape of the chair, which involves commitment and comfort. These are not chairs one perches on. They invite daydreaming, reading, dozing, and sipping a summer drink or cup of tea.
