Do you ever sit quietly off to the side and watch everyday folks go about their business? One of the reasons I became a journalist was because I particularly enjoyed the process. It forces you to become a sponge for detail as you try to remember not just the things you see, but the inferences that connect them all. It's how storytellers start to build the stories they share with the rest of us.

I saw this walker from way across the river. If I were a cartoonist, I'd draw a big empty bubble above the image, then fill it in. But I'm not a cartoonist, and I'm hoping you'll fill in the proverbial bubble.

Your turn: Please caption this image. Enter as often as you wish. Pet input is welcome, too. I'll announce winner next Sunday.

About last week's image of an oil slick: I took this picture in the cold, damp parking lot of a tired old Wendy's across the road from a tired old factory (click here for photo) during a brief pit stop here on the way home from Florida. It was a miserable day, yet this little slice of pavement-bound color seemed to call out to me. I almost fell on my face while composing it, though - I failed to pay attention to the coefficient of friction of wet, oil-slicked asphalt. The drive-through lady seemed amused.

Honorable menschens were many this week, thanks to a really strong cross-section of submissions. Here they are:
  • Killired: Fallen rainbow
  • Robin: City Slicker and Tears of a clown
  • Terri: Pretty slick photography
  • Jennifer: Blazin'
  • Sara: Joseph's oil coat of many colors
  • Heidi: Toxic Rainbow
  • Awareness: Fatal Attraction
  • Tiel Aisha Ansari: Slick moves
  • JC: Apocalypse
  • Mike Wood: Gasoline Alley
  • Steve: Iridesecration
  • Linda: When rainbows cry
And the winner is...Moi, for Troubled waters. This was hard to judge, because there were so many fantastic suggestions. Moi is a gifted photographer who never ceases to see the world just a little differently - so I kinda relate to her work. Please drop into her blog and send her a happy or two for sharing this gem.

  1. Caption? "Cold."

Incidentally, this is one of those times where a black and white picture (rather than a color one) is VERY effective.

  2. Hi Carmi! Thank you for stopping by my blog. I'm glad you like my pics. Anna C and I actually know each other outside of blogland. I love her blog because it keeps me up to date with the goings on in her family despite how far away we are from each other. Hope you're able to stop by my page more often. Let me know what you think!

  4. Again...I have nothing...I am just not very good at this captioning stuff!

Hope you are well and have a great week!

  5. I heartily agree with the emperor. This picture wouldn't be half as effective if it were in colour. As it is, it's stark and drags the viewer in to the experience. Just wonderful.

  6. I think that one of things that got me interested in photography was my total inability to draw anything. Not that I'm any great shakes as a photographer, but the camera takes care of the mechanics for me at least.

Caption: "Pedestrian roads... why aren't there more?"

  7. I am struggling to think of a caption, my dear.

    um.....
The arrival of Spring always makes me this of the Jimmy Durante poem:

Spring is Sprung, The grass is riz,
I wonder where dah birdies is?
Dah birdies is on dah wing,
That's funny, I thought dah wing wuz on dah birdie.....

  8. Hey Carmi! I like to watch people too and for the same reasons, it's the 'happenings' that go on, the samll moments that would otherwise go unoticed unless someone was watching.

That is such a great pic for monochrome. I suggest "The last white carpet" to mark the melting of your snow!

  9. This picture reminds me of when I lived in upstate NY and went walking along the river in a state park, even in winter. I just needed the fresh air.

    So my caption is:

    "Not waiting any longer"

"just do it" fits here too! LOL.

I really like the one someone posted: "spring in her step" - very fitting!!

  13. "Anyone seen a white shepherd dog in all this snow ?"

If I'm on my own at our Mall, I'll deliberately sit someplace where I can watch everyone go by. Being the stationary point in the midst of people rushing around is relaxing somehow.

  14. Thanks for the visit Carmi! I too am thinking "generation to generation" more often these day (the older I get, I think). I think the bubble over this girl's head reads "Darn car!" :)

  19. Thanks for the "honorable menschen" for last week's caption contest!

As for this week... I see a "thought bubble" above this walker's head and first came up with "I think I can, I think I can..."

    or

"Look out, Bikini! Here I come!"

Have a great rest of your week, Carmi!

  30. If she had a thought bubble? It might say this:

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Schlemeel, schlemazel, hasenfeffer incorporated.

    Hey, Laverne! Where'd you go?"

Okay, totally dating myself here but I couldn't help it...
