Man on the moon?
London, ON, June 2008 [Click to embiggen]
Last week's Thematic Photographic theme, glass, seemed simple at first glance. But like so many things in my life, it took a few extra and very welcome twists along the way. Ultimately, it turned out to be an elemental challenge that prompted some amazing responses from some amazing bloggers. Thank you all so much!
So instead of bucking convention this week, I thought I'd continue the trend with a similarly elemental theme, wood. It touches our lives in so many ways that it's difficult to imagine what life would be like without it. And all from something that started out as a seed and a dream. An amazing thing, this wood is.
I came across this somewhat startling scene while walking along a pastoral stretch of London's multipurpose path network. As I composed this macro shot beside the burbling river, an elderly couple passed by and asked what I was shooting. I explained my addiction to abstract macros, and they both nodded their heads and asked for a closer look. As I showed them the pictures on the camera's screen, they nodded their heads enthusiastically and said I should keep looking for stories in small scenes.
And so I shall.
Your turn: If you're new to Thematic Photographic, here's the lowdown. If you know the drill, I'll let you get cracking...
- I post a new entry every Wednesday evening.
- Each entry has a unique theme.
- You post a similarly themed image over on your blog.
- You paste a link to your entry in a comment here. If you've already posted something that fits (on a blog, Facebook, MySpace, wherever) simply post the link to the existing entry.
- Delirious photo sharing and happiness ensues.
One more thing: Two Canadian TV appearances coming up in the very near future.
- Tonight at 9:15 ET - CTV Newsnet, talking with Marcia MacMillan about the upcoming online game, Spore. Update: Click here to see the CTV interview.
- Tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. ET - Business News Network, speaking with Linda Sims about the latest Research In Motion quarterly results. Update: Click here to see the BNN interview.
What a great shot. I need to get more creative with my shots and really start playing around with my camera!
ReplyDeleteI see you have already put out the new TP. I love wood and can't wait to work on this theme.
ReplyDeleteOne last thing about glass, which we have all been thinking about all week. My husband just found this article on foxnews.com. From simple window panes to airplanes. But the question comes down to: Is glass a liquid or a solid?

Looks like Jupiter!!
ReplyDeleteI'll be watching CTV tonight - and playing Spore, as you well know...will have applause for you after the show!
I love the texture od this shot. Yes taking out of the car pictures can be fun, as long as ur not driving. Although I've done that too :)
ReplyDeleteThe thing I like about this, Carmi, is that even though I know what it is, I'm still seeing seven different things in it. Way cool.
ReplyDeleteIt is "somewhat startling" indeed. I see small, creepy faces coming out of that wood!
ReplyDeleteVery cool Carmi.
Carmi, that looks like some of the photos I see on the astronomy website everyday!
ReplyDeleteAnother fabulous theme. Thanks! This is really making me think so much more creatively and differently about my photos. I love the texture and shades on your introductory photo. I have had the day off today so actually managed to get this done a lot quicker than I normally would.... here's the link:

i had fun photographing these, once i started tho i couldn't stop.... :)
hope all is well.
Nice contrast to last weeks glass. Very warm and organic. My post is up here - once again, one from the archives.
ReplyDeleteAs usual, an intriguing and thought provoking shot -- and theme. I love ultra-tight macro shots like this, though I'm ill-equipped to shoot them properly. I went looking for some shots I had of driftwood -- both of the fresh and salt water varieties -- but didn't find the ones I was looking for. I'll look again this evening, but for now I'll offer this contribution.
ReplyDeleteHey Carmi, great shot! Last night I was gathering up some old logs and stuff for burning in the fire pit. I picked up this one piece that had been laying in one spot for many years. When I turned it over, it was marred by years of bugs feasting on it. It looked like a huge crater with many spires. It was quite amazing. It had never occurred to me to photograph just a piece of scrap wood before. Anyway, tonight I might just take a picture of it and post it for all to see.
ReplyDeleteThat truly does look like the surface of another planet....Mars? Saturn? LOVE the color and texture.
ReplyDeleteHere is my contribution:

Great idea, Carmi. My "wood" has age rings. Although, in going through my pics, I may have to post several things this week. I have lots of cool pics.
ReplyDeleteHave I told you that I love this idea?
Okay... I think of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup on top of it and it has almost completely melted down and been slightly mixed together to get your photo. It's not wood at all, is it? Ha ha! Neato photo!
ReplyDeleteHere is mine for the week:

Again, I had a great time with this TP. I got to go through some photos I haven't looked at for awhile. Come visit and see my photos of wood, in various forms. Thanks, again, Carmi!

love the wood theme and your photo as well. I love the knots on bare wood.
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time picking one for this week's. I love photographing trees, but in the end I choose something else.

Well, since I'm behind the times, I played #3 and #4...they aren't good but they are a start. I LOVE this Carmi! Great idea!

Hi Carmi... I agree with the others. The first thought I had when I only glanced at your photo was that it resembled the pictures I've seen of Jupiter. Very interesting shot. I'm up a bit earlier this week, as I was so excited about this that I couldn't wait to tackle it.

Hi Carmi, First, thank you for taking the time to answer my question in considerable detail...I found it very helpful! I am trying to think outside the box when I take these pics but sometimes, I am "stumped" at how to approach the subject differently! Anyways, your comments were helpful..thank you!
ReplyDeleteSecondly, here is my contribution for wood so far from my archives...will give it thought and be on the look out while I jet off to Ireland! Hopefully, I can post some while over in the Emerald Isle in the next 3 weeks! i look forward to looking at everyone's pics! Here is my link:

Like several other people have said, that looks like another planet. Neat shot! I saw this when you posted about it on Wordless Wednesday a few weeks ago and am just now getting around to participating. My not-as-cool-as-yours wood photo is up at http://mommyinthewoods.blogspot.com/2008/06/thematic-photography-wood.html
ReplyDeleteCarmi
ReplyDeleteI am cheating, let me know if that's ok or if I should wait for my camera issues to resolve.

Always a thought provoking image from you, so much so, here am I now just adding my '2 cents' worth! No, seriously, we have been busy with painting our house and have just come to add my contribution!
ReplyDeleteIt is an oldie, but still (for this time of year, very topical... Twisted
