Thematic Photographic 5 - Sky

The sun sets over London
London, ON, June 2008 [Click to embiggen]

I've been poking my lens skyward for as long as I've owned a camera. The sky offers one of the most varied and challenging landscapes for a photographer. Between constantly shifting light, a ball of gas that can burn your sensor to oblivion and the occasional bout of rain or, gasp, snow, the sky is hardly an easy subject to work with. But when you come home with magic moments like this, you realize it's worth the extra effort.

Your turn: What do you see when you look up? Here's how Thematic Photographic works, and I hope you'll play along this week:
  1. I post a new entry every Wednesday evening.
  2. Each entry has a unique theme. This week's is...sky!
  3. You post a similarly themed image over on your blog.
  4. You paste a link to your entry in a comment here.
  5. If you've already posted something that fits (on a blog, Facebook, MySpace, wherever) simply post the link to the existing entry.
  6. Repeat process as often as you wish. Send this link to friends, too...the more, the merrier.
If you want to make sure you're always up on the latest Thematic Photographic-related news, here's the link to the label/tag/category of all TP entries on my blog:

Thanks!

  2. What a great theme. I just posted a Wordless Wednesday with this theme... is it okay to count that? I hope so, because I loved this picture!

I took it as the storm was coming in. It's not the best quality, as I took it through my window, but I love the way you can see the ominous look of the clouds coming in for the storm.

  10. While I wish I could claim this as my own, I only collected this photo because of its unique make-up. I think this is a great place to share it.

  14. I have a cool wood shot I took here in N. Ireland, but it is posted amidst a selection of other shots I have taken so far in N. Ireland...a couple of them may be used for your sky theme this week! Having a fabulous time here...weather not the best, but that is okay! http://swile67.blogspot.com/2008/07/picture-is-worth-thousand-words.html

  15. Had a tough time choosing from the archives on this theme. "Skyscapes" are some of my favorite shots, so I have lots of them. (And probably more on the way from this coming weekend).
Meanwhile, here are three from the beach from a few years back.

  16. When I look up, I notice that I need to get new light bulbs.

    Cheers.

  18. Hey Carmi, now that we've done "Sky" (Air) how about continuing the "elemental" approach with Fire, Earth and Water? (He said, knowing exactly which archive shot he'd use for at least one of these.)

  19. Hey Carmi,
Mine is up, but this time at our OTHER blog!

Andrew 'Boy' Charlton Pool, you'll see what I mean!

  20. Before we get started with our 4th of July fireworks, I posted some of nature's best on http://picturethisatlast.blogspot.com/2008/07/thematic-photographic-5-sky.html

I take a lot of sky photos because you never know what you'll get. Enjoy!

  21. Beautiful shot, Carmi! I keep trying to get in on the theme but have missed it every week. But you hit the jackpot with this one. My first post will be up tomorrow, because I have something else there today. I'll likely have multiples - too many to choose from. I'll be back with a link to the actual post at my photoblog - http://photo-bunny.blogspot.com.

  26. I'm up with something a little bit different to everybody else's, it seems. I missed the daytime sky... I couldn't even catch the transition sky. So I posted the night sky. It's nothing spectacular like the fiery orange of your sky, Carmi, or the crystal blue and cottony white of some of the others' pictures. But I think it's elegant in its simplicity. Or something.

I was out of town on a workshop and for some reason woke up way earlier than I would have liked. I was rewarded with this beautiful view...totally worth the lost sleep.

  33. Oh, Carmi, I have tons of wonderful sky pictures, but as you know I was out of town, so I didn't take time to prowl through my archives (believe it or not I wasn't online that much!).

However...I DID take several shots of the beautiful skies of Kiawah last week; and not only does that fit TP for this theme, it's my WW for today!

Your captures are much more diverse than mine...I've got to work harder to vary my results.

  34. I have a few more shots up. Looking forward to the next theme. :D
