Reflective impressionism
Laval, QC, August 2008
Please note: This is the final photo in support of this week's Thematic Photographic theme, watery. I invite you to submit your own photo or link by clicking here (it's never too late, btw.) Please stay tuned later Wednesday evening, when I post the new TP theme for the coming week. If you'd like to participate in Caption This, point your mouse this way.I never noticed how incredibly rich the surface of a moving body of water can be when you take the time to look into its reflection. At different times of day, it seems to take on radically different personalities. That fact alone invites you to keep returning to the riverbank, because you never know when you'll see something new.
Your turn: What body of water is located nearest your home? I hope you'll share a quick line or two about your last vist there.
One more thing: Do you Flickr? I do. If a picture or two a day on the blog isn't enough, head over to my Flickr page (click here) for a massive overload of visions through my lens. Here's the full link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/writteninc/
That is absolutely gorgeous, Carmi. You should frame it.
ReplyDeleteWell, being in Florida, and on the west coast, we have the Gulf of Mexico. Much more beautiful and calm than the ocean side, I find when I go, I feel a serenity that I don't feel elsewhere. However, because of the sun's rays, I don't go too often. However, when Ella was here, we did go. She loved it; in fact, she was in my post about water. I actually just put one more up today.
That is absolutely awesome! You should frame that!!
ReplyDeleteI have a post coming up about a body of water near to us - so... no sneak previews - sorry. Stay tuned..
Monet, eat your heart out. I love the texture. It really does smack of impressionism! Nice shot.
ReplyDelete-smarmoofus
Oooh, my favorite colors in that one!!
ReplyDeleteThe closest body of water to me is Falls Lake and I have never been there. I prefer the ocean.
That's beautiful! For me, it would either be the Gulf of Mexico or Lake Conroe, Texas...both an equal distance in either directions. I love both.
ReplyDeleteHi Carmi! What a gorgeous shot...and beautiful words!
ReplyDeleteLet's see. Oh yeah, it would be the Atlantic...wild and furious right now. Less than a mile and half away. Went this weekend, just for a moment. Also live next to a canal...a drainage canal...but that's water too, yes? Not so pretty.
This looks like one of the many famous impressionist paintings I studied in Art History in college. Beautiful! I remember an assignment to do an impressionist painting but, being of the school of realists, I put too much detail in for it to be truly impressionist. Oh, well, so enters photography --- and Photoshop if I want to be an impressionist.
ReplyDeleteI want to thank you for your very nice comments on my posts of the USS Eisenhower. I'm glad that a picture says a thousand words, because it is going to take all 400 plus photos to describe just part of what that day meant to me. These men and women are truly remarkable for sailing the seas in any ship, especially one the size of a Las Vegas Hotel, but without many of the amenities. I'm very proud of our Navy -- and one of it's officers, in particular.
Gosh this is just gorgeous....amazing! Can't wait for TP's next theme!
ReplyDeleteThat's one amazing shot. It almost looks like an oil painting with the fine ripples in the surface.
ReplyDeleteThe closest body of water to me really depends on what qualifies as a body of water. There are hundreds of impoundments both natural and man-made in the state -- several of which come with very interesting histories. Then of course, there's the Atlantic Ocean. There are easily a half-dozen named ponds/lakes within a 15-mile radius of my house, but I guess the closest one would be Shelley Lake -- where my boat house shot was taken. I've spent quite a few afternoons and evenings at that park doing various things. We used to play softball in an open field not far from the shore (with home plate facing away from the water, thanks very much!). There's an arts center there, canoe/paddle boat rentals, a walking/biking trail... it's dog friendly (leash laws apply) and fishing and unpowered boating are allowed (no swimming or powercraft for liability reasons I'm sure). A little further away is Lake Johnson which may or may not allow power boats (since I don't have one I don't have any reason to know), but also features more in the way of amenities. Johnson also hosts live jazz concerts by local artists lakeside during the summer. One of my favorite local singers, Susan Reeves, plays there sometimes and the last time I was there was for one of her shows.
You can't go far around here without hitting water in one form or another. Go far enough (about 125 miles) and you'll hit the Atlantic Ocean. Which is easily my favorite of the available options. I think a look at my photos from the last week will tell you why.
That's beautiful. It reminds me of an impressionist painting from the 19th Century... as if I knew anything about art history.
ReplyDeleteLike those have said before me- GORGEOUS! It is so surreal and dreamy. I just want to climb in the picture and live for awhile! Water is indeed magical. I could sit and look at water for HOURS. Now, if only I did indeed have hours, or minutes even!
ReplyDeleteWe are on the Chesapeake Bay and about 15 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. There is water everywhere around here but I haven't had a lot of time to shoot it yet. I shot a reflection in a rain puddle the other day- does that count?!
Yesterday we visited our favorite local body of water, a place I've blogged about 3 times now! In fact, I just finished posting the photos. Here is the link:

I agree, your photo looks very Monet. I'd love to sit and relax in front of that scene.
Thank you again for visiting and commenting, I am very honored that you stopped by.
I am anxiously awaiting your next theme!
I love water, looking at it or hearing it flow in a fountain.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really beautiful photo. So tranquil and it relaxes me.
definitely a watercolor
ReplyDeleteNice abstract shot. Happy WW! :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice shot. At first I thought it was edited in Photoshop. Then I realized what it really is.
ReplyDeleteReally awesome.
My WW entry is here.
Oh yes, VERY Monet indeed...
ReplyDeleteCool shot! Ours is up as well at burntofferings and more at bernies fotoblog.
Have a great WW!!
WOW! Absolutely beautiful shot,Carmi!Mine is HERE if you have a time! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful. There's something so magical about reflection in water.
ReplyDeleteLiving in Israel there isn't much water around, so other than the permanent puddle across the street from where the neighbors keep washing out their garage the closest body of water is probably the beginning of the Yarkon River (more like a stream actually), which eventually flows in the Mediterranean Sea, about 20 minutes away by car.
Point of Order: That's not a photo; that's a Monet painting.
ReplyDelete:)
Cheers.
I love this image. It's so thought provoking. I love any body of water, but the nearest I have to me is the Chattahoochee River and a couple of lakes. I will go out of my way in the car just to drive by the lakes. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday! This week I’m featuring an elephant over at History Is Elementary, a wonderful place in Atlanta for a girly lunch over at Georgia on My Mind, and over at Got Bible? I featured an ancient New Testament town.
Looks like a Monet!
ReplyDeleteHi Carmi, Happy WW! I should have been in at the beginning of the Thematic Photographic theme, this last one of your's is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteMy nearest body of water is Lake Conroe (Texas), three blocks from our home.
..
My Mustang II had belonged to my Mom until she died. I was the original owner, buying if from Ford Motor Company as it was leased by a Ford executive.
My Mom got it two weeks after I bought it and took it to Nebraska. They salt their roads but she didn't drive on snowy or icy days.
It has 67,6xx miles on it now. All is original except the water pump, tires, and battery.
..
great post and picturte
ReplyDeleteHello, Carmi. Thank you for your kind comment on my recent post at the Master's Artist.
ReplyDeleteI've seen your name mentioned (and your photography praised) on some of my friends' blogs. After looking through your gorgeous water-themed shots, I can easily see why.
I love photography and appreciate any incentive to improve my skills or to live more aware of the world around me. Mind if I join in on some of your challenges?
Jeanne
Oh wow...that's beautiful. A photographic Monet. I agree, it would be a wonderful framed piece.
ReplyDeleteAs usual - your photography is prettier than art!
ReplyDeleteHere in Floyd, Va., we have a place called Thunderstruck - a part of the Little River where we swim quite often.

Where has the summer gone? I didn't even get a chance to get over there this year.
The shimmering has that dreamy and surreal effect. It's great that you've made the insignificant very brilliant and attractive.
ReplyDeleteInteresting image. It looks like something that would hang in a gallery. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteThat is stunning, Carmi! I would hope you'll enlarge and frame that one. We have so little water here - I just don't have as much access. Really amazing. :D
ReplyDeletehello ... came here through WW ... very nice ... tranquil ...
ReplyDeleteright now, there's water in my back yard (it's been raining constantly since last night!) :)
ReplyDeleteAs you know, I often post water shots.
