Musically reflective
London, ON, March 2007
Quick note: This photo continues this week's Thematic Photographic journey through musically-themed pictures. If you've got one you'd like to share, it's not too late (come to think of it, it's never too late to share a vision or two. Just click here to get involved.)I risk dating myself whenever I discuss my early experiences with vinyl records. The neat thing about an album was how you could sorta tell how the music played out by simply looking at the disc. You could see the tracks, identify the quiet and intense passages, almost feel the music with your eyes. And when you put the album oh so carefully on the turntable, the tactile connection between you and your music was sealed.
With apologies to the wizards who figured out how to digitize music, CDs just aren't the same. I wonder if our kids will have similarly soft recollections of their early years downloading, archiving and burning music to a digital medium. Doubtful.
Your turn: Got an early memory of recorded music? Do tell!
One more thing: Every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. EDT, we post the first Thematic Photographic entry for the coming week. Traditionally, we pre-announce the upcoming theme on Tuesday to give everyone a bit of time to think about what they'd like to shoot and share. With that in mind, the next TP theme will be...
Yellow
I haven't touched on colors yet, so I thought we'd launch with a bit of brightness.
Awesome! I love color! When you're at green, let me know :-)

I do remember vinyl. I also remember reel to reel and stringing it all over the place as a toddler. Most of my recording memories are of tape and trying to record that *one* song off the radio while cursing the DJ for talking through the whole thing. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHappy WW! Thanks for the trip to memory lane.
Vinyl had such a warm sound. I miss it.
ReplyDeleteI miss those days as well. CD's are just not the same. I so miss my Olivia Newton John album. :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome shot. I've always loved the trippy colors of CDs.
ReplyDeleteEarly music memories. Well, the first 45 that I bought as a pre-teen (not little kid music) was "Lucy in the Sky" by Elton John. I had to special order it from Woolco because everyone carried the version by the Beatles. Being the big EJ fan that I was, I had to have it by him.
In some ways, I totally miss records. Something about placing it on the spindle, putting the arm in place, and waiting for it to drop. Then the needle so carefully swung over and dropped down into the grooves.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Carmi. :D
Sort of off topic but I heard you on the radio on my way home from work!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved the picture, Carmi, so full of colour and so artistic!!
ReplyDeleteSweet mercy, Carmi...45s at spend the night parties! Talk about dating yourself! We'd bring stacks to play (and I'm smiling at the memory...thanks!).
ReplyDeleteI think I'm back for a round of TP and maybe even Caption this. Missed you...hope all is well in your neck!
another wonderful photo..
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I had words when he sold a bunch of our "vinyls" at a yard sale.
I remember crawling into my friends attic where her grandpa's old wind up phonograph (victorola?) sat in the corner dust. We played up there and with it until her sister fell through the ceiling above the kitchen.
That ended our attic adventures.
Beautiful colors!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Carmi !Happy WW.
ReplyDeleteGreat Vinyl and cool edit!

CD's may not be as much of a sensory experience, but they do make rainbows :). Records never did that.
ReplyDeleteThat was one creative shot indeed!
ReplyDeletehappy WW.
Great shot (@^.^@)
ReplyDeleteHappy WW!!
Oh how I love my vinyl, I still have it too. My kids think they are roof tiles, you might call them shingles?
ReplyDeleteI think kids are quite enamored by downloading n burning CD's, Probably one day they will look back nostolgically when there is a whole new technology. And yes I do have fond memories of playing 45's when little more than a toddler.
ReplyDeleteAre you watching me Carmi ?? I went out and did a whole Yellow shoot last week! scary.
ReplyDeleteAh the hours spent flipping through those endless racks of vinyl discs. There was a chain of stores called "Licorice Pizza"... a unique take on the initials "LP".
ReplyDeleteyes when i was a little kid i remember playing my favorite vinyl records by Bread and some other artists. I felt the same way! reminiscing!
ReplyDeleteGreat lighting and reflective color. Nice shot.
ReplyDeleteThe first 45 I bought with my own money was, "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a Dennis Miller bit he did on SNL's Weekend Update right after the original re-release of all the Beatles albums on CD.
ReplyDelete"When Charles Manson listened to the White album remastered on CD he was quoted as saying 'I guess maybe they weren't talking to me after all.'"I remember the first "real" vinyl albums I ever bought: Paranoid by Black Sabbath, closely followed by Deep Purple's Machine Head. Years later I replaced them with the digital versions, probably remastered, filtered, noise-gated and otherwise "sanitized". And while the sound quality was phenomenal, listening to "War Pigs" and "Highway Star" (not to mention "Smoke on the Water") without the snap-crackle-pop was just totally wrong!
If I've already linked this one up, I apologize but the way this week has gone, I can't remember if I did or not. I'm thinking not. So for my final foray into the fun this week I submit:
Thematic Photographic 47: Music v.7.0This has been a great theme! I hate to see it end.
Those CDs and DVDs make excellent coasters ..
ReplyDeleteThis is very cool. Th reflection and the colors bouncing off it are lovely.
ReplyDeleteCOOL photo. I remember vinyl too.
