Thematic Photographic 67 - Urban

90 degrees from nowhere
San Francisco, CA, July 2008

This week's Thematic Photographic theme, urban, reflects my belief that the seemingly endless process of paving and repaving the planet leaves lessons behind that we'd do well to learn. It's not a question of, to quote The Hulk, "Urban/bad, nature/good." Rather, it's a reminder that we should never be in such a rush to get through the day that we don't stop and wonder how the places that surround us came to be.

Because if we lose the ability to ask those "why" questions, we may as well pack up our tents and head home.

Your turn: Thematic Photographic is your opportunity to share your photographic vision with like-minded folks. Here's how it works:
  • Every Wednesday evening, at precisely 7 o'clock Eastern, I post a new Thematic Photographic entry.
  • Each entry has a unique theme. This week's is...urban!
  • You post a similarly themed image over on your blog.
  • You paste a link to your entry in a comment here.
  • If you've already posted something that fits (on a blog, Facebook, MySpace, wherever) simply post the link to the existing entry. Old or new, all photos are welcome.
  • You may post as many photos or links as you wish. For the next week, I'll be supporting this theme with a related picture/posting each day. I encourage you to do the same. This is all about sharing, so feel free to share to your heart's content!
  • Please share this link with friends, too, and encourage them to join in. The more, the merrier.
  • And please accept my thanks for your enthusiasm. Your participation has made TP a true highlight for me each and every week.

  1. When I saw this theme I wasn't sure what direction to take for an opener. I didn't want to turn it into a week long "My World Tuesday", so I tried to pull in different urban settings from different places. There will be much from the film archives in this batch I think. Including this jewel from the Great College Road Trip of 2005 that I've been saving for a special occasion.

  2. I love all the various textures in your photograph. Excellent, as always.

I have a shot taken at night in Times Square. Even the newer, more antiseptic Times Square is exciting on a summer night.

  4. I don't know if I'm doing the right thing here by posting the link, but it's already in my Picasa images so I'm just linking here. It's one of the photos I took during a trip to Calcutta, which is a couple of hours away from home by train; this collection of paint tins was strung to a long bamboo pole, which was balanced across the shoulders of the guy collecting them....

  8. I cheated on this one - the photo I used isn't strictly mine, though in my stash of pics on film I have shots that echo it.

I think it's legitimate use of someone else's work though:

  11. Mine is up... not very creative, I'm afraid... but I think the best I've got for now. Had I known the theme BEFORE I went to Baltimore yesterday I might have done better! :)

For some reason your shot reminds me of Gotham City or something... I expect BATMAN to appear!

  14. Thanks for your really kind comments. I love finding new blogs to read and this is definitely one I'll keep up on. It's always a great feeling when someone finds me and I go take a look only to discover it's someone I'm very interested in as well.

I love that you have theme's! Definitely something I plan to get in on!

  15. Thanks so much for your visit Carmi...It's been a long time. I see that the font here is still so tiny that these old eyes--and getting older by the minute---just cannot read it all....
But, I do appreciate your visit very much, my dear.

  16. an interesting thing to think about. I'm thinking "urban" is really a lot more temporary than we think.

  17. Sorry I'm late - and to top it all off I got lost in your photo for a good 20 minutes - good work!.

Excellent topic this week. A nice opportunity to reflect upon the impermanence of the world we've created for ourselves.

    Here's mine.

  21. Carmi,

Whilst it has baan a while since participating in TP, I thought a post whilst here in Doha, could give a very different feel to this weeks installment... Changing Face of Doha highlights just how the 'OLD' is being replaced by the 'NEW'...

    Thoughts/comments please...
