Day's end
London, ON, April 2009
About this photo: It's night week all week long, thanks to our latest Thematic Photographic theme. Just click over here to get involved. It's the most fun you can have with a lens.Day doesn't just turn to night. Someone doesn't just flip a switch and the light doesn't just disappear. What happens in between day and night often represents the best show that the sky can put on. All we need to do is remember to look upwards.
Something tells me that's a lesson that extends well beyond basic skywatching.
Your turn: Wherever you are, please find the sky and look at it for a bit. What do you see?
I see that the sun has yet to peek over the horizon and daylight (such as it is) is scarcely illuminating the frozen landscape. North of 64 degrees latitude, we exist in the dusky-dawn-twilight between night and night for several months out of the year.
ReplyDeleteThe sunsets and sunrises are magical, though- even if they are separated by less than four hours.
Right now my sky is filled with small pillows of cloud that are cotton white on top and dark gray below. The sun peaks through when the cold wind pushes them across the blue.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful....love your thoughts on day to night.
ReplyDeleteMorning is my favorite, but night has a mystery to it.
Thanks for sharing!
What a beautiful sunset!
ReplyDeleteHere it is mid-afternoon. The sky is an even pale gray. (It remids me of a light wool blanket.)Even though it is only 28f (-14c)out you can see tinly, white flecks floating like miniature parachutes to the aready blanketed ground.
I love that. I stepped outside with my kids here in Virginia yesterday to go out to eat and captured a similar photo. Mine has a power line in it though. I think I can crop it and not lose the effect too much.
ReplyDeleteThe bare trees against the late afternoon sky is enchanting to me.
currently just a blank slate of grey and yuck.
ReplyDeletebut i hear you on the twixt night and day thing i have a bunch of surise and sunset pics.

I just happened to be outside and it is dark here now and chilly for Florida. The sky looks like a beautiful cobalt blue with thousands of stars. I stood there and just took in the enormity of the sky.. It really is quite amazing ..quite...
ReplyDeleteOne can never go wrong with a well-taken sunset photo. Well done! :)
ReplyDeleteYour words are lovely and so very true. Right now at this hour I see a dark black sky, from this window, and perhaps on the walk later with the dogs there will be stars to brighten our stroll in the frigid air! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe sky was gray today, New York saw its first snow flakes. But, right before dark, the western horizon turned a light orange before slipping away.
ReplyDeleteI love those early dusk photos, beautiful.
I love your view of the sky, very nice photo.
ReplyDeleteThe sky today in what is known as the "City of Champions" and the capital of Alberta was cold looking, gray and frosty with tinges of pinks floating through the freezing haze. I managed to get a glimpse of the sun briefly which warmed my heart. I love Canada, it's the cold which makes me wonder why I insist on staying here throughout the winters... oh right, I have classes to attend! :-)
Love this idea, when I look up I see eternity, the sky is so fantastic at making you feel earthed :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous shot. Watching a sunset is one of my fav passtimes. Beauty in nature.
