Six years ago today, I posted a funny little missive outlining the physics of Santa Claus. It used some basic principles of science to debunk the myth of the fat old guy who flies behind reindeer and scoots down your chimney.
It was as funny as heck then, and it's just as funny now. Since I haven't found anything funnier in the ensuing years, I hope you'll pop back in time and get a good laugh out of it.

Your turn: Department store Santas. Yay or nay? Why/why not?
Carmi, I think I heard you interveiwed on the radio the other day talking about this (smiles). Take care and have a very Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteGosh you would not believe how many parents were pulling the santa card to try and get their kids to behave this week.
ReplyDeleteI got called cruel by some people for not doing the whole santa thing for my lad. I would rather he know that each of these gifts are thoughts of love for my little boy from family and friends. As a note I haven't gone ooo santas not real I just treat the santa character like I would in a story.
Does depriving him of the santa myth deprive him of fantasy No to him Bob the Builder and Thomas the tank engine are like real people.
The article was funny some one had fun working that out :)
Santa and his deer are MAGIC, dangit! THEY CAN FLY!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteMy son was never thrilled with the department store Santas, but I have no problem with them. If you talk to some of the guys who sit in that chair every year, you get to hear some very touching stories...a lot of kids use Santa as a sounding board, sometimes a confessor, often a shoulder to cry on. I wouldn't take that away from them for anything.
Dead funny. And yes, children should not be subjected to the belief that Santa truly exists. It's just like making a group of illiterate people believe in a deity just to discipline them. Be good, and Santa comes. Shouldn't they better know that their parents care for them and give them gifts? Are children mere toys that you play with their feelings? Even if, because of social pressure, etc., etc., you are forced to do the Santa thing for your kids, please, please, wean them away from it as soon as possible. Santa as a symbol for all that's good is the limit. Deception of little kids is not funny. I didn't find it funny when I found out, though I must say my Mom made every effort to stop me from believing in him: I didn't believe in him before I started school and met more people of my age; and deceiving teachers.
ReplyDeleteBtw, there's a mistake in the calculation, most Hindu and Muslim kids in India DO hang stockings.
I grew up with the Christkind and St Nick came on the 6th Dec, he looked like the old fashion kind , not this dude in a red suit and he had no reindeers. Never really warmed up to the coa cola drinking guy lol
ReplyDeleteHave a great Holiday.
