Lunar soil
London, ON, September 2010
About this photo: We're kicking off our newest Thematic Photographic theme, night*. What's Thematic Photographic? Simply put, it's our weekly, absolutely non-competitive photo sharing activity. To participate, post a similarly-themed pic over on your blog or site, then leave a comment here to let folks know where to find it. Visit other participants to share in the goodness, and repeat the process as often as you wish. We also won't complain if you invite someone new to the picture party, too, as this is definitely a more-folks-is-better activity. More details available here, otherwise have fun with the theme! The scene: I'm walking the dog on a cool late summer evening. He's his usual frenetic self, following his snorting nose from one tree to another, catching up on all the neighborhood doggie news as only he can. As we turn for home, I see the moon rising just above the horizon. I can almost touch it and feel the craters with my fingertips. I've never been much of an astro-specialist when it comes to photography, but I decide if I'm ever going to try, now's the time. So I encourage Frasier to skip to it so I can grab my camera and give it a go.
I won't be displaying the results at the university's next astronomy convention, but I'm still pleased I was able to bring something home that reminded me of that particular experience. Life moves so blindingly fast sometimes that I find myself struggling with sign-posting everyday moments along the way. Using the camera helps me ensure these moments don't dissolve into a sea of forgettable sameness.
This photo is one of those attempts to leave a stake in the ground. I hope it works.
Your turn: Does it? Do you use your camera to remember the everyday? How?
About the theme: There are no real rules when it comes to choosing photos to go along with a given theme. If it moves you and it's either closely or even remotely connected, toss it in and see what happens. Thematic Photographic is about expanding our optical horizons and having a bit of collaborative fun along the way. It isn't rigid, it isn't judgmental, and it isn't limited in any way. So if you took it at night, think it reminds you of the night, seems a little dark in terms of visuals or tone, or whatever, hit the publish button and see what happens. We can't wait to see what you come up with.
My camera is my tangible link to the everyday, to memories small and large. Without photographs, I'd be hard pressed to recall the good, the bad or anything else that falls in the cracks between.
ReplyDeleteMy night shot is here, taken a couple of days before an epic ice storm washed the trees clean of snow.
I shot this now demolished farm house in 2009 at the corner of Bradley and Airport Road in London in the middle of the night. A very long exposure experiment. Perhaps, not a typical night image. :)

ReplyDeleteCarmi - love the picture. I've never been able to capture the craters of the moon so clearly. Hat's off!
ReplyDeleteHere is my link for this week's theme. Looking forward to checking out everyone else's over the next week.
NIGHT
my son totally loves the picture
ReplyDeleteHere's my metaphorical interpretation of this theme.

Lovely.
ReplyDeleteI wished I had my camera when I walked around the lake this afternoon. First I saw a single duck, then another popped out of the water, then a third, a fourth, until six ducks slipped off, in twos all in the same direction.
Wow. Wonderful photo. And since I walk my dog in the evening, at dark, it really resonates with me.
ReplyDeleteI have some good night photos, but somehow, I am always drawn to photos of urban places at night, rather than country places.
See my new banner for the month for a nice night picture.

More to come.
I took your suggestion and shot a few photos tonight while walking my dog. My camera comes with me wherever I go. I learned that from you Carmi.

Your moon shot is terrific!
I did a night post a few weeks back, so I was ready for you! I've just added a shot that I took down at Madinat Jumeirah last week.
ReplyDeletehttp://sandpitdiaries.blogspot.com/2010/11/lesson-7-let-there-be-night.html
Also, wondering what kind of zoom you had on? All my moon pics are miniscule, and I end up trashing them.
Fabulous moon!
ReplyDeleteMy post for this theme is a product of what is around this night. I don't think I capture enough of my everyday. Thanks for a reason to pull out my camera and play a bit.

I love the moon, it makes a great muse. I asked Santa to upgrade my equipment. ;-)

That's beautiful...
ReplyDeleteI am still a bit afraid of shooting at night myself, so I'm also full of awe that you captured the moon so beautifully...
That is a great pic of the moon, I am impressed with your skills, I have never been able to get the moon like that.
ReplyDeleteHere is my post with some night pics, I have to say yeah, a lot of my photography is to help capture life. I forgot that I dressed as a hippie one Halloween until this assignment. And I remember the night I took the pictures up the canyon clearly as if it were yesterday, really beautiful summers night, warm but not hot. Here is where you can find those photos

ReplyDeleteMine is here, first of a two-part.

My night post is: A brief glimpse into evening stops along the way during a memorable trip.

Enjoy-I can't wait to see yours too!
I love that picture, like a big Orange in the sky.
ReplyDeleteHere are mine
I don't have a lot of night shots, i'm stumped when it comes to settings (lazy photographer)
And here's my more literal interpretation (happier, too)
ReplyDeletehttp://apaperbackwriter.blogspot.com/2010/12/photo-non-contest-126-night_03.html
Ooooh Night.
ReplyDeleteHere is Mine
I have one up, now.

Hey I'm not late this week LOL Love that shot Carmi. The moon is a favorite of mine. You can find my entry here
ReplyDeleteI love how the craters at the boundary of light and darkness almost look three dimensional as if you could reach out and feel the depression with your hand. This is one of my thoughts on the subject.
ReplyDeleteHi Carmi.. me again.. The non-photographer poet.. Here is my link for this weeks theme:

Most of my night time shots seem to be taken on holiday. Here's one from our recent trip to Port Macquarie
ReplyDeleteThis is a breathtaking shot. So close it looks like you could grab it from the sky.
ReplyDelete~~~~~~
I'm trying this theme thing yet again. (With my cell phone....so bare with me.)

I use my camera to capture a feeling in a moment! It may be the unexpected lighting, the delight in a Zen moment, a zany interaction, a little critter with a cute character pose! Hopefully, those who view my photos sense a little of the unique and unexpected and gain some pleasure!
ReplyDeleteHere is my photo for night:
Waves of Night
awesome moon!
ReplyDeletei take my camera everywhere.
and capture whatever strikes me...as different...something to remember...
shadows. critters. bugs. leaves. clouds.
night. dark. moon & stars. the quiet. the nocturnal. the night seems to move slower...than the frenzied daytime. that's why i like it....
Another set of night pictures I came up with.
ReplyDeleteHERE
~Sharing more night pictures.~ I had just bought my camera. Isn't it weird that you can buy the same brand that you had before, but you still must learn how to use the new one? I was on vacation and able to take my time and play with the settings.

Given today's snow, I thought I would do another current one for this theme. Posted on my blog
ReplyDeleteAnother night shot - sort of an urban classic.

The night is dispelled by light... all things with light are more beautiful at night when the light is most needed. Another "night" posted here.
ReplyDeleteWow Carmi, you've got many posts on night! Very cool! Here is a night closer to home!

My latest addition to the night theme.

this is a good theme. I can't wait to find out the next one!
I went across the sea for this last night photo... or at least my brother did.. I travel vicariously through his travels mostly. So this one is from his stint in Valencia, Spain where he performed in Les Troyens.
ReplyDeleteHeres my shots in the dark night
ReplyDeleteHere's a few more pics of orbs.
ReplyDeleteThey're out there, people! Open your eyes and see!
