About this photo: It's in the details. Thematic. Here.I'm not especially high-strung, and I don't play the diva card. Much. But if you've known me for heaven knows how long, yet you misspell my name, I'm going to be slightly ticked. In this case, let's call it half my life, give or take.
I sit on a board of directors with a guy who finds new ways to misspell my name every time out. I often miss receiving e-mail because he manually types my e-mail address - wrongly - and then doesn't re-send the message after the fact. Polite requests to have it corrected are met with a shrug and a laugh. I find silliness like this unacceptable.
Yes, I'm ornery. But it's disrespectful. I was raised and trained to take the extra moment to double-check that you got it right. In the Internet Age, it's not that difficult. Making sure is the least I can do to treat those around me as I'd like to be treated in return. That is all.
I don't get too upset when people misspell my surname, as there are just too many "correct" spellings of the name.
ReplyDeleteI DO get upset when people misspell signs and such, though. Educated adults who still can't make a plural possessive drive me nuts.
Oooooh, you landed squarely on one of my gnarliest pet peeves. Ever. In fact, I try to take it one step further and use the name folks PREFER, rather than their given name (if there is a difference). Unfortunately, a lot of people just don't care- or they have a vicious streak- and insist on using a name like a handle and thrashing you in the shins with it.
ReplyDeleteYour first name is unusual enough that anyone misspelling it should go out of their way to at least add an extra syllable or something. Simply adjudicating the "i" into a "y" (and knowing better) is so juvenile- I'd expect that from a first grader.
As a Tracie that ends in an "ie", I feel your pain. No one ever gets my name right the first time, and they often continue to get my name wrong. This includes one aunt who hasn't even accidentally spelled my name right in the last 28 years.

ReplyDeleteI'm a stickler for correct spelling of names, first and last. I'm especially offended when people persistently mispronounce my name after repeatedly correcting them! Don't even get me started on "then vs than", "its vs it's", "your vs you're", and so on. And what's with the "would of" instead of "would've"? Ugh!
ReplyDeletePet peeve of mine... it's Darlene NOT Darleen, not Marlene, it's simply Darlene, however some get away with Darlin. ;-) . I hear you Carmi (I had to double check to ensure I had the spelling correct, no disrespect intended by no means).

Yes, misspelling names is very disrepectful.
ReplyDeleteMy email signature includes my name and my company name. Also, my email address itself includes my first name in full.
And I can't tell you how many times I receive responses to my emails with my name misspelled in the salutation, and a reference to my company misspelling its name.
