On losing the light

"It's so much darker when a light goes out than it would have been if it had never shone."
John Steinbeck, The Winter of Our Discontent
Steinbeck always had a knack for phrasings that somehow captured my mood. Looks like nothing's changed, as this is pretty much how I feel tonight: thankful for having had light in the first place, yet sad that it has now gone dark.

There are days when I wish this life thing made more sense than it does. Today is one of them.

  1. Carmi, it does make sense... Emotion gets in the way and clouds things...Believe me, I've been there and at the time, you feel like everything is racing in your head and u can't separate/compartmentalize... it takes years to figure it out...

  3. Ah yes, but, we were the better for having had it, and the very memory of it, brings us light again.

  4. Carmi,I am a Steinbeck fan too and as well as he can describe darkness he can describe light. From "Of Mice and Men," “At about 10 o'clock in the morning the sun threw a bright dust-laden bar through one of the side windows and in and out of the beam flies shot like rushing stars.”

I hope you see light in your life again soon.

  5. That is one of my favorite quotes.

Another favorite relating to the loss of someone belongs to my granny. In these circumstances she would say, "As long as we hold on to our memories, our loved ones are never really gone." I always took comfort in that thought and it has helped me many times over the years. Especially so, when she left us.
