On doing what you love

"If you're doing what you love to do, you're doing what you were meant to do."

Your turn: Do you love what you do?

  1. Actually, yes, I believe I do love what I do! As a SAHM for 22 years, I definitely loved what I did -- it was what I had always wanted to do and be when I grew up. But eventually I worked myself out of that job as the kids grew; when my husband retired, I needed something else and sort of stumbled into my current job. There are days I am frustrated with events out of my control but overall I am fulfilled and content.

  2. I do love what I'm doing, and I'm real lucky because I just kind of fell into it. I never thought of teaching as a career for me until a friend got me substituting for extra money. Fell in love with it, went back to college and now, 22 years later, still having a great time.

  3. James, that is an interesting point. I clicked through and read your blog post as well, and there is some good food-for-thought there.
When I write that I loved my job as a SAHM, that doesn't mean the daily grunge of dirty diapers, constantly preparing meals, or general messes to clean were ignored or done by someone else; it means that when I weighed the pros and cons, being a SAHM came down heavily on the side of a fulfilling career. I am aware that I am lucky to have had that opportunity. My current job does not pay well and requires more time than I signed up for, but it is also fulfilling work. Again, having work that is fulfilling is possibly a lucky thing. I do like what I do and am (mostly) doing what I like.
Yes, there are jobs that many people would consider unlovable -- and yet, sometimes I wonder if it has more to do with contentment than chasing happiness.

I will consider more about the idea of the elitist attitude.
