Said goodbye to my old car this week. I won't miss the hear-it-from-miles-away exhaust or the spontaneous fuel leak. Or the creeping rust. Or the passenger-side carpet that never quite dried out.

But here's the thing: For 8-plus years, she took me and my family wherever we needed to go. She never failed, never complained, always got us there and home, safely and comfortably. She served us well, and hopefully the folks we donated her to will fix her up and get a few more years of loyal service.

In the end, a car is just a car. A thing. A chattel. A depreciating, decomposing asset. But somehow it weasels its way into the story of our life. I hope Henrietta the red Civic leads a similarly charmed life with us.
