Where we come across a bus stop

I'm out with the wonderpuppy for her last walk of the night. It's one of the blessings of dog ownership, the built-in walks on the daily schedule. Some folks freak out at the commitment - or at the very least complain about being pulled out of the house again and again, often when the weather is miserable - but I'd rather embrace them as an opportunity. We only get a limited number of these walks, after all.

We don't usually head past this spot, but the soft light pooling onto the dead-quiet suburban streetscape like an oasis seems to pull me closer. We detour a bit to get a closer look, and as I size it up from up-close, Calli calmly explores a new-to-her stretch of sidewalk.

We're not here long. It's late, and this little girl is running out of steam after an action-packed day of hanging out with her humans. She gives me lots of slack in the leash as I compose a few quick scenes with my smartphone before turning for home.

I often wonder if she knows what I'm doing when I'm shooting. Or if she knows how much I treasure seemingly trivial little moments like this one. She is, after all, the reason we're here, and there'd be no story of this place, in this moment, if I didn't have a ready-made excuse to get out and explore the neighborhood.

I give her an extra treat as we set off on the last leg of our journey. She's earned it, and then some.
