Where a dog sniffs out a leaf

One last dance in the grass

I've got to give our dog credit for finding this leaf on this morning's walk. Being a schnauzer, she leads with her nose, and she sniffed this one out before abruptly turning her head toward me, as if I should shoot it or something.

Somehow, Calli the wonderdog avoided messing the scene up, which given her history is quite the achievement. Yes, she got extra treats for that. And for sitting quietly beside me as I crouched down and tried to line up the shot.

We got stares from other early-morning walkers, but by now that's nothing abnormal for us - like when people familiar with her insanity see her from two blocks away and cross to the other side of the street. We have something of a reputation around the neighborhood, and I won't lie and say it's a good one. It isn't.

But all of that is immaterial. What the rest of the world thinks of a somewhat-imbalanced 15-pound dog doesn't matter to me. She's woven herself into the fabric of us, to the point that she now scopes out photo opportunities when we're roaming the 'hood.

She's a keeper, albeit one who seems to follow her own path. Then again, by virtue of photos like this, I guess I'm following my own path, too.
