The Griswolds would be proud London, ON July 2019 This photo originally shared on Instagram |
It was shaping up to be another terrible day among a string of similarly dark ones, and this relic of a bygone era sitting ignored in the shadows was an ideal, if temporary, refuge from the overwhelming struggles of life playing out a few floors above.
I wasn't finished with big old American barges, though.
In the dog days of summer, I came across that car's twin - right down to the fake wood and time-worn light blue paint - in a forlorn lot in the shadows of an abandoned factory in London's industrial east side.
Was the universe playing with my head? Was it trying to remind me that things sometimes happen in clusters, and for no apparent reason? I'd like to believe so, as a little bit of mystery in our lives can't be a bad thing.
Or perhaps I needed a reminder to keep looking for inspiration in the places where no one else pays attention anymore. Because this is where we'll find the things, stories, and experiences that might otherwise fade, unnoticed, from our midst.
After all, if we don't look for them, who will? And what will we be left with when they disappear for good?
