When a bird chases the sunset

A single gull cruises the still air just above the calm waters, parallel to the shoreline as the sun sheds it final rays before tucking in for the night.

She probably has no idea she's in Grand Bend, or flying over the eastern shore of Lake Huron. But she likely knows this place infinitely better than any of the few humans gathered where sand meets water, awaiting the sunset before heading home for good.

I don't know where this bird's home is, and I can't tell if she appreciates the beauty she gets to sail through whenever she so chooses.

Whatever's going through her little bird brain in the 1/1250 of a second it takes to capture this shot, I hope they're happy thoughts. And that wherever she ends up, she's able to spend a safe and comfy night before the sun beckons tomorrow.

Wishing a good night to a bird may seem like an odd thing to think about as I peer through the viewfinder. But in life as well as photography, kindness takes many forms. And it never hurts to wish others well. Even if they happen to be birds.
