Pink fairy dust

Scene from a sidewalk

You see a lot of weird things on the sidewalk when you’re walking the dog.

And given the fact that the particular dog on the other end of the leash is a Miniature Schnauzer who will eat anything if we let her, constant vigilance is rather necessary.

And so it was on this morning’s rather rushed walk before the thunderstorms moved in. The horizon was already ominously dark, and the winds were picking up. Yet Calli was delightfully oblivious to it all as her relentlessly sniffing nose led us to the scene you see here.

Was it a candy dropped from a now-saddened child’s stroller? Or was it a crushed Molly pill left over from someone’s night of too much partying? Is that the shape of an abstract fish I see?

We’ll never know, and thankfully neither will she. Because I'm the paranoid one in this relationship, I saw this coming almost as soon as she did. She obediently sat off to the side while I quickly shot the scene. We do the spontaneous-street-shoot thing often enough that she already knows the drill.

We made it back home just before the skies opened up, a small-ish smear of pink the only evidence left of another tiny adventure in the life of a tiny dog with an outsized personality.

I’ll keep my eyes open next time, too, because we never quite know what her nose will find along the way.
