Convenience store at night

Quiet and bright

After the last customer has left and the owner has locked up for the night, the neighborhood convenience store stands like an oasis of light amid the darkness of the neighborhood.

No one will remember this place for its architecture. But no one who lives nearby can forget it, either.

Because we've all been inside once. Or maybe more. We've all picked something up here when nothing else was open. Or too far away.

We were all children once, and the treats here were unforgettable. Indeed, our kids still carry the gauzy/happy memories of walks here for ice cream.

Sure, basic economics tells us these are expensive places to shop. We pay for convenience, after all.

But I'd hate to imagine a town without them at all. That's a price I'd rather not pay.
