Ray Bradbury’s iconic short story, All Summer in a Day, kept popping into my head as I walked through this foggy forest still shaking off the rains of the past few days.

The story of children on Venus who are perpetually stuck indoors by relentless rains, and are granted a single hour of play outside every seven years before the rains return, is but one of so many of Bradbury’s works that have imprinted themselves on me.

These woods feel like that story. The soaked-to-the-bone landscape. The condensation rolling into the air and dripping to the ground. The landscape trying to catch its breath before the rain returns anew.

The mind works in remarkable ways, with triggers from long ago going off precisely when we allow ourselves to disconnect from the here-and-now.

I’ve got to spend more time here. No matter the weather.
