Lines by the side of the road

I’ll often break up a long bike ride through the countryside with quiet stops along the side of the road.

They give me a chance to snack and hydrate, check in with the fam, and maybe take a photo or two. More importantly, they slow things down and give me a chance to appreciate simply being out there.

For the longest time, cycling had devolved into a numbers exercise, where distance, average speed, and a host of other metrics became something of an obsession.

Which is all well and good, of course, until you return home with supposedly awesome numbers, but can’t remember what it felt like to roll past a particular farmer’s field.

I realized I was missing out.

If you look closely at the photo, you’ll notice the Garmin bike computer is still there, so I’m still collecting data, still using it to ensure I’m out long enough and getting enough exercise.

But the numbers are no longer the only reason I ride. After all, you can’t smell a data feed, and last time I checked, cows couldn’t count.
