Brutalism at the ballgame

Part of our ongoing series of photos we shoot when we’re AT the ballgame but aren’t actually WATCHING the ballgame.

This often involves looking around at anything BUT the actual playing field. Like nearby - or not-so-nearby - buildings.

Exhibit A: the courthouse across the river, which is a fine example of brutalist architecture. The design philosophy gets a bit of a bad rap because of its association with mid-to-late-20th-century repressive regimes and it’s generous use of massive, often repetitive concrete forms.

But I kinda like it. It fits the purpose, stands out within the skyline, is of its time, and gets people talking. Even if they aren’t fans, they’re somehow moved.

And since architecture is at least one part art, and since art is supposed to make us think and feel and engage, then I think it’s safe to assume mission accomplished.

I’ve got to get out to ballgames more often. So much to see.
