They’re absolutely right, as it’s terribly dangerous for our eyes, and can easily cause permanent damage to our vision.
But if you know what you’re doing - like you have protective lenses or you’re a photographer or an astronomer with similarly appropriate filters - you might be able to safely see the literal source of planetary energy do its tning.
A couple of weeks ago, I shot through smoke-filled skies and grabbed this image from 150 million kilometres away. Those smudges? Sun spots. The one on the left is easily the size of Earth.
Made me feel rather small.
As it should.
