Birds at the pier

Greet the morning sun

On a day that now exists to me only as a gauzy memory, I sit alone in the cool sand where the ocean either begins or ends and watch a flock of birds divebomb the pier.

Under the first golden rays of the day, they loop together in the sky, almost crashing into the tough old wooden structure before skimming the tops of the waves. Then they climb steeply into the early morning haze, only to turn back as one, ready for another pass.

I watch them repeat their aerobatics more times than I dare admit, not wanting the show to end. It’s strangely cathartic.

It’s hard to fully explain the millennia of evolution that crafts living beings so finely capable of this kind of collaboration.

But it’s just as easy to quietly observe the spectacle and be mesmerized by the magic.
