And as we sit north of the border and watch the systematic deconstruction of democracy by an autocratic wannabe, the need to understand why we fought, and why those ideals are never guaranteed, has never been more pronounced.
We aren’t owed freedom. It isn’t automatic. And it’s never immune from the forces that would extinguish it.
Saying thank you one day a year feels like the bare minimum. Even the bare minimum no longer seems sufficient.
