Another squirrel redux

Please take me home
London, ON, July 2007 [Click to embiggen]

I've always been of two minds about squirrels. On the one hand, they're quite cute. From a purely shallow, visual perspective, they're definitely keepers. Yet they're also the most voracious little destroyers you'll ever meet. Bring one home and you're likely to not have a home by morning.

Doesn't mean they won't pose for the occasional picture while we're playing by the river. Nice rodent.

Your turn: Thematic Photographic's animal theme continues through tomorrow, when I'll unveil the new theme for the coming week. Anyone want to guess what it'll be?

  1. Hmm... well given the patterns here, I'm guessing "Plants"? (I still have some 'shroom shots I didn't use)

  2. What a cutie! Looks like he posed just for you. Had to make sure he did his part to not further the bad rep of squirrels worldwide. LOL!!

  3. I am of two minds about them as well. We once had one get into a crawl space off my office (over the garage) and created a lot of mess by pulling insulation off the walls to make a bed for babies. I bought a Have-a-Heart trap and caught it and released it about 10 miles from our house. It looked rabid by the time it had spent 3 hours in the trap.

  4. Hey, Carmi! I was just making the rounds when my father popped in... I've been telling him about Thematic Photographic and he's curious. So I'm going to go over and set him up with a blog so he can participate. But while he was here, I showed him your site... I was aiming for Thematic Photographic, but went to the main page first. So he saw this squirrel photo, and he's really impressed. I think you're about to get a lot of effusive praise... brace yourself.

Meanwhile, my dad's right... your squirrel photo is cute. I have a hard time capturing their "cuddliness" in photos. Well done!

  5. Your mother didn't think squirrels were so cute when you would leave them bowls of nuts on the back balcony.

Nor do I think she thought it was amusing when you left milk for the stray cats in the neighborhood.

I think it's endearing! I'm glad that our children have the same love of animals that we both do.

I do have to admit that we have more pictures of animals, fish, birds, reptiles, etc. than anyone else I know! :-)

  6. Yes, squirrels are darling little pests. But I don't like them climbing up the shepherd's hooks to get at the sunflower seeds we put out for the birds. Now watching them try to climb a shepherd's hook slathered with vaseline --- now that is cute! (No animals are EVER harmed in our backyard.)

  7. I've got a real soft spot for squirrels. They're just so darn cute! Of course, I've never crossed them either.

  8. I just wrote this in comments to someone that is a bit freaky --someone wrote to me a few weeks ago that you and I look at things similarly and I thought that was an odd thing for someone to say but--- I may have to agree....You do remind me of one of my younger brothers Nature loving-- A little tongue in cheek w/ the family perspective

  11. Hello Carmi!
This photo is really cool! I can see a reflection of the sky (the blue along with the white of the clouds) and a shadow of you taking the picture in the squirrel's eye.
We feed the squirrels that visit our backyard all the time. We have gained their trust to the point that they will take peanuts from our hands.
We have named one Skippy and the other Jiffy.
