Dead leaves at our feet

Where it all begins

Yesterday I shared my habit of taking cathedral shots of the forest canopy. So today brings us another weird habit, albeit in the opposite direction.

Maybe a dirty forest floor covered with crumpled red and brown leaves is less spectacular than the canopy overhead, but it’s no less important. Indeed, it’s likely more so.

Because there’s a lot going on down by our feet. And those towering trees? They started off down there once, as seedlings competing for light and water. Even now, as they tower over the landscape, their roots dig deep under the earth, depending on it for survival.

Life starts and ends on the forest floor. And as the leaves overhead change color, dry up, and tumble down one last time, they fuel another in a seemingly endless number of cycles.

Maybe we look down and see an ending. But it’s really just the start of whatever comes next.

Aren’t you glad we looked down?
