The view under the bridge

There’s a bridge over the river that snakes its way through the university campus. Most days it teems with an endless stream of traffic, students heading to class, everyone else heading to work or life or whatever.

It’s a narrow bridge, with tight sidewalks and no shoulders. So everyone crosses carefully, barely noticing the river below.

It’s a different story on the path that runs underneath the span, a quiet spot where pedestrians and cyclists can and do stop what they’re doing to take in the scene.

Which is where I find myself hitting pause as I pedal my way home. The thrum of life echoes through the concrete and steel above my head, but down here it’s a different story.

Two realities playing out within metres of each other, each group of actors completely unaware of the other. As I stare at the reflective waters, I wonder what would happen if more of us took the time to change where we stand every once in a while.
