Windswept
London, ON, May 2009
About this photo: Thematic Photographic celebrates green all week long. Do you have any green you'd like to share? If so, come right this way.Sometimes, the thing you look for is right under your feet. On this breezy afternoon, I could hear the long grass sway in the wind as I tried to absorb a scene most would just as soon dismiss as routine.
Which begs the question: What is routine, anyway, and who defines it?
"Routine" has somehow become pejorative in our generation. Fact is, "routine" is comfortable. It gives a sense of security, of stability. It isn't until it becomes all-consuming that it's a bad thing. We need those things that represent touchstones for us, just to keep our gyros balanced.
ReplyDeleteOf course breaking out of it once in a while is just as important -- otherwise routine becomes ennui, dulling the senses and robbing us of the enjoyment of things that break up the routine. Think of it, isn't a trip to the beach much more fun when it's an "event" than if you lived there 365 days a year?
Okay, maybe that's a bad example. But imagine if you will, commuting to work every day in a Hyundai Sonata, and then one day you have a chance to make the trip in this:

Routine is a delicious french dish of french fries( Freedom fries in America)topped with cheese curds and gravy.
ReplyDeleteOh. What? That's Poutine?
Oh. Never mind then.
A routine is a Dodge minivan with a Volkswagon badge on it.
Oh. That's a Routan? Sorry.
Routine is leaving silly comments on Carmi's blog.
Yeah, that sounds about right.

P.S. I was laying in a field of dreams and got hit in the noggin with a baseball by some shoeless guy.
As a child, fields like that were such a regular part of my daily life, especially in the summer. As an adult, it's nonexistent. I should change that.
ReplyDeleteMy granddaughter Ella appears to be in a field of green in my offering for "green."
ReplyDeleteMojo is right; routine is comfortable and comforting! Green is my favorite color and I'm enjoying all the offerings.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if all fields hold dreams in the rustling of the tall grass?
ReplyDeleteOdd, in light of the recent political climate half a world away, green makes me think of the turmoil in Iran and what the immediate future holds.
ReplyDeleteNice shot, by the way - I love the perfect chaotic beauty of it.
Tanya sent me, and as always, I'm glad she did.
I came back for more... hoping that this week at least I won't be inundating you with a half-dozen links on the last day.
ReplyDeleteToday's offering is marginally similar in theme to your amber waves of green.
Okay, they both have plants.

routine
ReplyDeleteyour routine could be a shocking adventure for me
my routine might be unexpected lurchings to another
isn't routine a way to make our way through life
with the minimum amount of trouble
making it all just Happen
without thinking
without puzzling
in calm
and peaceful
....something or other
I accepted the challenge to go green this week. I love green plants, so today on my blog I went green. thanks for the challenge. this is my blog address http://snapperone.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteGreen... I'm surrounded by green yet I've not yet submitted a picture for Thematic Photographic... I must do that! :)
ReplyDeleteIn yet another example of synchronicity in my life, your comment about the long grass swaying in the wind echoes something I read in a book of Simon Van Booy's short stories this morning: "The low hissing of the river. His own breathing. Wind rushing between stems of wet grass."
ReplyDeleteYour posts always make me think, even though I don't often comment except to post thematic photos.
