Not-so-still waters

Almost frozen, infinitely textured

Time moves quickly when you find yourself standing in a valley amid the fading light of a late winter afternoon.

Even now, 45 minutes before sunset, it's clear the camera - and by extension the person holding it - is fighting a losing battle. Because sunset comes earlier when you can't even see the horizon.

So you look for elements that harness the light. Accentuate it. Reflect it. That take what little is still there and make it an iota more workable. So you can squeeze out a few more scenes before calling it quits for the night.

The river offers up an easy answer. So I look for the perfect spot, the one that reflects the light just so. I shuffle in every direction to find that magical point in space, careful to avoid going for an unplanned swim in the freezing current.

I’m here for barely two minutes before my fingers lose feeling amid the increasingly bluish light. I tuck the camera away and bury my hands deep in my pockets, thankful to have had even a blink of time to take this spectacle in.
