Which explains how I found myself wandering alone through a nearby valley as the sun slowly settled into the western sky.
The river cut a meandering path through the tall forest, its banks blanketed white, the rocks amid the current flecked with tendrils of ice. As the shadows gradually lengthened, the snow reflected an increasingly soft, blue light as the cold settled into my fingers and the landscape prepared for the night.
All I could hear was the burbling water from below competing with the wind in the branches above, a soundtrack that felt infinitely more chill than the relentless drone of traffic that typically defines life here.
Get deep enough into this wondrous place and any trace of urban life seems to fade into oblivion. It’s a blessed change of pace, a reminder that nature holds powers no city can ever hope to match.

Where’s your escape? What’s it like to be there?
