Inevitability on display London, ON February 2022 This photo originally shared on Instagram |
You wish you could somehow take it back, undo what you've done, or otherwise turn back time.
That's the feeling I get when I watch water drip from the bottom of an icicle and accelerate downward.
There is, of course, no arguing with the laws of physics, particularly gravity. And once that droplet lets go, what happens next is as inevitable as day and night. That tiny glob of water, perfectly reflecting the world around it, has a date with the ground, in this case, in about a second.
So, no, there is no going back. No undoing of what's been done. No reverse or delete button. No making something whole again after an integral piece of it has been lost.
And I can't help but wonder how this simple example of phase change outside our front door holds a broader lesson for us all.
