Big ship at rest

Bulk freighters like the CSL Welland ply the Great Lakes without so much as a second thought from those of us on-shore.

They provide materials for the very core of the manufacturing economy, yet most of us likely can’t remember the last time we caught a glimpse of one, let alone hung out nearby and watched its crew do their thing.

So on a damp, grey January afternoon, I stood pierside and did just that. I had a few minutes between where I was and where I needed to be, and couldn’t resist the appeal of a leviathan of the lakes preparing for its next voyage.

It wasn’t a profound moment or even a decent photo. But it turned into a necessary moment all the same, one where I learned the value of paying attention to things that would otherwise remain hidden.

Because everything - and indeed everyone - has a story to tell.
