Sometimes it isn’t night at all.
And it doesn’t always play out in the places one would normally associate with a conventional date.
Like this one. 1:00 p.m. in the meat department of a grocery store. An ordinary place where we’ve come to engage in the ordinary act of modern-day hunting and foraging.
The funhouse-like glass case attracts my eye, and soon enough I’m leaning into it in search of reflections and angles.
The employees behind the counter wander over and ask what I’m doing. The middle-aged woman seems skeptical, her voice challenging me to justify myself. The younger guy is smiling, and laughs when I say I’m taking weird pics for my Instagram account.
“I feel you, man.”
I show them both this pic, and they both have a chuckle before we head back to our respective missions.
Some people get it. Some need a little convincing.
