How dogs view snow

Where to stick my nose first...

Our little corner of The Great White North got some snow overnight, and Social Media Nation woke up to a mass freakout over the white stuff.

Feeds overflowed with photos of snowy lawns, trees, houses, and cars. Captions ranged from mild bemusement to enraged-WTF-isms and everything in between.

Meanwhile a single dog ventured into the white wonderland and took it all in.

I'll never know exactly what was going through that delightfully bouncy Schnauzer brain of hers on the other end of her leash, but by virtue of her incessant nose-digging into the snow-covered grass, I'm reasonably certain she was a happy girl. So I simply followed along and watched her do her snowy thing.

I choose to view her experience as a subtle and timely reminder that we only THINK we're in control of all that goes on around us. And when the occasional - or perhaps even frequent - curveball gets thrown our way, raging at the weather Gods, or whoever else is deemed responsible, isn't going to change the outcome. Or make us feel any better in the process.

Which explains why letting a dog guide us may not be such a bad way to live.

Wherever you are, whether it's snowy or not, please stay safe out there. And always play with the dog when you're given the opportunity.
