Eight ball, corner pocket

Art on brick

This building is doomed, a crumbling, boarded-up relic waiting for developers to move in with excavators as the never-ending dance of so-called progress continues.

Years ago, some kind soul decided the east-facing wall deserved a mural. Unlike most examples of this kind of vital urban art, this one is painted well above street level, a fading reminder of why Londoners once came here.

Scenes like this dot the downtown core, reflections of memories of places that no longer exist, or soon won’t. There is no preservation of urban art when the bricked canvases on which they’re created are demolished.

Maybe they’ll be remembered. Or more than likely not, another undocumented chapter in the history of a city seemingly uninterested in appreciating how it got here.

Either way, I’ll miss this work when it’s gone. I think we all will, even if we never once set foot in the place.
