Even though I've never been a fan of the posed shot, and shudder at the prospect of ordering people around to fit my perception of reality, it's not too difficult for a child to becom
e a little self conscious when dear old dad is snapping away at the oddest moments. I get that. I also get that sometimes they want it to be turned off.But they have so much of my wife in them - the way they look, talk, walk and carry themselves - that I often can't resist picking up the camera and risking their kid-wrath. They'll thank me for it eventually, I tell myself. They don't appreciate the historical value of these pictures, I continue. Then I add a little whipped cream for good measure: they'll make great slide show mater
ial when they get married someday.Okay, let's not go there for a couple of decades, shall we?
About these photos: Zach's on top, Dahlia's next, then Noah takes us home. Sometimes I think I've evolved into the storyteller that I am because we had them, that I wouldn't be anything like the person I am if we hadn't become parents.

Your children are beautiful, Carmi, objectively speaking they are stunning.
But from all I know from your writings, and from all I know about you and Debbie, I know they are beautiful human beings and are continuing to grow as such, modeled by two exceptional human beings.
And I'm not just saying that.
Thank you for sharing the kinderlach (I don't know the plural for "shaina punim")...continue the awesome journey!!

Zach and Noah: so handsome, so tolerant. I can see just a hint of "Ok, Dad, just one more shot" in Noah's face. Dahliah is downright beautiful. You caught a far away look in her face about which poets through the ages have written volumes! But most of all these children reflect the love they receive from their wonderful parents.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful children, Carmi. Yours appear to be contemplative, like my eldest. And it seems to me that they become slightly stiff around the camera somewhere about age 8?? Mine did, anyway.

Worse still when I forget it!

They may carry a lot of Debbie in them, but just from what you can see in photographs, there's an awful lot of Carmi going on there too. Especially Zach.
ReplyDeleteAnd I strongly suspect that there's a lot of both of you not visibly apparent happening under the surface. And that's the part I hope they'll always keep.
(PS: Lissa, I have no idea what "Shaina punim" means, but it sounds like it's already plural.)

ReplyDeletemojo - shaina punim translates to beautiful face, from the Yiddish...but means so much more than just the words.
ReplyDeleteFor years and years, growing up, I thought my Jewish name WAS shaina punim or shaina maidel (maidel - girl)...not being a Yiddish speaker, but growing up with grandparents who were, that's what I took away.
Well, if that's already plural? It works for me!
(btw - HUGE hello to Bubbie Zee - long time no see but fond fond memories. And HUGE hugs to morahmommy - you've every reason to be sooooooo proud, not only of the kidlets but the daddy-o too!)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful Children. I see much of you in them as well. Do any of them have the journalist or the photoist bug? As for when grandparents want the next photos, Carmi, as a grandparent I can tell you, there are never enough photos!
ReplyDeleteYup...as a Grandparent myself I can say they will definitely be pleased. There are never enough pictures of those we love. Kids grow so fast, it seems, so I know I want to stop time and savor the moments.
ReplyDeleteI hated when my Dad took pictures of me, oh so long ago. He took forever to get everything just right. (His Dad was a professional photographer)Now I'm happy he took them as I have a album of family history.

Your kids look so much like you! :D My parents are always wanting more photos of the boys. Unfortunately, my camera cable is broken, so it`s a bit complicated to get the photos onto my computer to send!

ReplyDeleteYeah the "slideshow" will go down like a lead balloon maybe but it will be funny, I can see it now, oh don't mind dear old dad, he just likes to wheel these old photos out to try and embarrass me, it didn't work then it won't work now..
Oh boy just thought about it one day that could be me delightfully cute and loveable nephew doing just that bring his first girlfriend back to meet dear "old mom n dad" god help him...
