A brief-yet-ongoing journal of all things Carmi. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll reach for your mouse to click back to Google. But you'll be intrigued. And you'll feel compelled to return following your next bowl of oatmeal. With brown sugar. And milk.

Thematic Photographic 118 - Branched
Reach for the sky
London, ON, March 2009
[Click photo to embiggen]
If you're new to Written Inc., we do a weekly photographic shareathon kinda thing called Thematic Photographic where I post a theme, and everyone shares perspectives based on that theme. Head here for the rules. We promise you it won't hurt.
For this week's theme, branched, I've decided to take some inspiration from the trees that have always inspired me. I spend a ridiculous amount of time outdoors - dog and bicycle...do the math - so I often find myself staring at trees and bushes, trying to figure out if they're worth a few megabytes on my camera's memory card (short answer: Often.) I also live in the Forest City, so it's only fair that I give branches their due.
As you explore the theme, keep in mind that a branch need not be limited to something that originated as a seed in the ground. As always, how you interpret a theme can be as out-there as you wish. The goal here is to stretch a little. I know you'll have as much fun with this theme as I have.
Your turn: Shoot a branch-themed pic, post it online, then post a comment here telling us where to find it. You can also share stuff from your archives - whatever's easiest. Rules here. TP-themed entries here. No wagering, please.

Please note that Written Inc. has been set up so that all comments must first be moderated before they go live on the blog. I apologize for the inconvenience, but this is to ensure bots and trolls don't muck up the works. If you have any difficulty leaving a comment here as a result, please feel free to email it to carmilevy AT gmail DOT com. Thank you for your understanding.
Have you had people try to wager before? That would take the fun out of it. I don't feel this is a "mine is better then yours" thing, but a "cool perspective, this is mine" thing.
ReplyDeleteI'll branch out on some photos later.
I love these challenges, especially the instruction to go "out-there" with it.
ReplyDeleteHere's mine.
And for once, Max and I didn't have the same ideas for this post.
ReplyDeleteHere are my pics:

This time I couldn't make myself go "out there" with it ... this time it's TREES, well not trees but branches and branches come on TREES! LOL
ReplyDeleteYou can see mine here
As usual, I took this a bit differently..lol

Before u posted the theme I was going thru my files and found this photo
This was last winter, and until now I had no idea why I took it. I must have known it would be perfect for a theme one day.

Another good challenge, Carmi!
ReplyDeleteWho's your daddy?
Take up fredamans offer - I want a link button to put on my page next to Illustration Friday's! :-)
ReplyDeletei love those branches ,but then again i love trees.
ReplyDeleteHere are mine
Carmi - it isn't easy to capture branches in a way to make them special - you pulled it off - that is a lovely image.
ReplyDeleteI am branching out by traveling and trying to continue my posting as I go. Not as easy as I thought and my image is really not indicative of the limits I am pushing.
Once again - thank you for the lovely challenge.

Have fun everyone! Karen
Thanks everyone. Every week it's exciting to see what the new theme is going to be, and even more exciting going through everyone's individual takes on it.
ReplyDeleteCarmi - I'm glad I stumbled upon your blog!
....and I second what Max said. I love this weekly game, but more importantly how now all week long I'll be seeing things branching out everywhere! Of course not just in the power and magic of trees but in odd little bits and pieces we stumble upon everyday and sometimes been known to miss. Taking my camera with me tomorrow to capture some random strange but powerful thing, or things! Thanks Carmi!
ReplyDeleteMe three! I'm having so much fun.
ReplyDeleteA couple more pictures
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how tortured the bare trees can look, this one is definitely frozen mid shriek!
ReplyDeleteA strange kind of beauty all the same.
Mine is a bit of monkey business!!

Well said Karen!
ReplyDeleteCarmi, you are giving so many people so much enjoyment with these challenges - like everyone else, I am really happy that I discovered your blog.
I've resisted trees for the moment, but I know I won't be able to let the whole week go by without some...
in the meantime, my branches are here
oh - and I hope you all had a wonderful time at your daughter's Bat Mitzvah!
ReplyDelete:)
Another random themed photo found it's way into this post... Maybe perhaps, if possible
ReplyDeleteIn sort of a mashup of your posts Friday and Saturday, this one shows it's tough to see where root, trunk and branch start or end.
ReplyDeleteI have a black and white copy of this - captioned 'Tenacity'- over my desk.
The buzz about my city is so fitting with our "Branched theme" that I just posted The Oldest Tree (350 years) eulogy a great "Ancient Oak" that will soon be toppled!

I thought of these pictures when I was cleaning up my desktop and figured they would be a good addition to the "Branched" theme. This time, they are of a real tree.
ReplyDeleteBranched
Funny! The word verification that just popped up is "mantree." How great is that for this theme?
ReplyDeleteHere's mine.
ReplyDeleteWe found some very interesting creatures in the branches while we were on holiday:
ReplyDeleteTo see them click here
I have another different type of branch but this one has been sitting in my file for a couple of years, just waiting to be used. It called to me like the far away pulsing drums in the movie Jumanji.... "use me, use me"... so i did.
ReplyDeleteI've used it in a previous TP challenge ("winter") but I love the first picture enough to point you to it again:

I've done one more "branched" photo post. Here 'tis if anyone cares to visit it.

And ... I knew I couldn't resist actual branches
ReplyDeleteA popular challenge this week! Mine is here
ReplyDeleteTree branches, the branching stream, or branching out and embracing a new hobby - here's a few more...
ReplyDeleteI made a blog post for this theme. It has new photos, but I have to mention one of my favorite flickr sets of all time: Shadow of the Branch!
ReplyDelete“Every man has a different idea of what's beautiful, and it's best to take the gesture, the shadow of the branch, and let the mind create the tree” ~ William Faulkner
Hi Carmi! Just posted some branches on my blog :) http://zestoflemons.blogspot.com/2010/10/branched.html Ps, love your photo!
ReplyDeleteNo trees this time, just more to hold on to summer as long as possible.
ReplyDeleteskidding in under the wire ( again!) here ...maybe one week I can get myself sorted in time.....
