It’s also quaint for an adult to attend one of those games with a tattered old tiny stuffie clipped onto the old camera bag. What’s the connection, then?
For me, it’s the simple freedom to hang out with my family and watch a game where kids get to grow up to throw a ball around a field for the entertainment of others. The government doesn’t impose laws around who gets to attend, what they may or may not wear, what they may or may not say in public, or even how many freaking hot dogs they may or may not eat.
It’s a sad irony that 23 years after an Afghani-based terrorist struck at the very core of the American financial system, that same country’s government continues to tighten the noose around women’s rights.
So we attend games and play with Po the Teletubby and chat idly with strangers and eat hot dogs simply because we can.
Because to not engage in these simple freedoms would suggest that we don’t appreciate all that we still have, or continue to push back against those who would take all of this away from us.
