It’s my favourite because this is as bright as it’s going to get, a source of brilliant light that banishes the darkness and gives focus to whatever hopes we happen to hold in our heart.
At the same time, it’s tinged with bitterness because it represents an ending. There are no more candles after these burn down, no more light to overcome the darkness.
Some holidays you wish would last longer, and this is one of them. There’s a glow to it that I’ve so often wished I could capture, or otherwise hold onto, to save for a later day when we’d otherwise really need it.
If only light worked that way. If only the fires of hope that burn so brightly on this night could be frozen in time.
On second thought, maybe they can. For we may not have a ninth candle to light on the next night, but hope takes many forms, and light need not always come from a candle.
I’m guessing it comes from us. That’s the game plan for tomorrow night. And, frankly, for every night thereafter.
