So before we step into the stairwell covered with decades of dust, under brick walls eroded by time, we grab on to industrial-looking railings polished smooth by generations of now-vanished workers and their bosses.
And we say a quiet thanks to whoever ensured this relic of a community now lost to time still stands, that we can still stand amid the dim light filtered through ancient glass and listen for the echoes from those who once brought these walls to life.
Not everything needs to become a new condo development, after all. Not all stories should be ended by the thing we call progress.
